Terminated from job? Advice please!!šŸ˜©

So yes...embarrassingly and unfortunately I was terminated from my job.(no judgment) It was quite complicated and this is long but please bare with me!!I worked at a child care center and because of covid we were furlowed in march. After hearing that our center wouldnā€™t open until possibly next year, I asked if there was anything else I could do in the meantime. The supervisor sent me to another center and this is where things went south. Long story short the supervisor only had me doing the grunt work no one else had to( i was not doing what i was promised!), we moved during the time i was working there to a city way further away from this center (i was supposed to get paid milage and never did) and the supervisor was starting to become very manipulative towards me and I would just take it. Anyways, this made my life a living hell, my mental health declined so much to the point where I was having intense mental breakdowns everyday. Finally, I said enough...i let them know i could not continue to work at THIS center anymore and did not show up the next day. (I was saying I can work when our center opens up but working at this center is too much for me right now) Within 1 hour they contacted HR and had me fired. They didnā€™t even call to clarify or ask if Iā€™m okay. I know I probably could have handled it better and part of this is my fault but I was so mentally unstable it was not possible for me to continue to another day safely. So my question is...as Iā€™m filling out job applications what should i say for ā€œreason for leaving?ā€ Should I even put it on there? My job before that was in 2019... so if i dont put it on there will they ask me what Iā€™ve been doing all this time? Would i be lying if i dont put it on there because applications usually say ā€œplz list the three most recent jobsā€ Iā€™m at a complete loss here and have been crying and stressing over it. Iā€™ve never been fired from anything before!

Whenever I was asked a question on a job application in a few words, I would explain that I would give a full explanation during my interview. Some questions can't be answered on an application and can be misconstrued by the reader. Are you doing these job applications online or on paper? I haven't filled one out in a long time but I helped my son fill out one 2 months ago and he got the job as plant packaging manager. I had him use my old resume' and change the words. How the application is filled out, the paper used and how many words will determine whether or not it goes in the trash before giving the applicant a chance to speak one on one.

This is very upsetting isn't it? It's happened to me before. Can you get hold of your previous supervisor and explain to them? Also how long did you work for your company? Did you have an employment contract? What reason did they give for firing you?

I don't know what country you are in, so can't advise on your employment rights. Look this up for your country.

As far as filling out application forms I would simply say you left coz of illness. This is true after all. Also put down you are fully recovered now. If you get an interview you can go into more detail. Do not however under any circumstances blame the employer or the supervisor. Good luck.

I only worked there for 6 months! I didnā€™t have a contract. They said ā€œI didnā€™t show up to my shift and stated I couldnā€™t work anymoreā€ but thats not what i said. I said I couldnā€™t work THERE anymore. Also i dont think i could contact this supervisor...i do have previous supervisors that will totally give me an amazing reference.

No not the last supervisor, but the one from the original place of work.

There are a few ways you could word your response. COVID complicates things across the board. You were transfered, fully believing you could do the job as described, the communte was challenging and the job turned out to be different than promised. You chose to wait to return to your original location, but instead they terminated you. Don't go into detail on the application. "Position at that location was not as described. They did not have an appropriate position for my qualifications and expectations." If your state is an at-will state, then they don't even need a reason to terminate you, "At-will" termination. "I wanted a more challenging, rewarding position and they could not provide it." You can tweak it to different perspectives.

Dear Angelface1034,

I have a lot of experience with HR and can tell you that I would list it and put personal reasons or health reasons. You do not have to elaborate these reasons. You technically were not fired since you called and said you couldn't continue working at that center. Or you could put you were unable to continue at the center you had been working because of COVID-19. Any of the three would be acceptable.

I have been fired before. Once at a fast food place where I was not fast enough "finishing" the hamburger bun. Lol. Another time as a hotel maid I was fired for actually cleaning the hotel room and not using toilet water to clean the entire bathroom. Uber gross. Anyway, it happens. Move on. Your mental health is the most important thing and to maintain your sanity you had to stop working there.

If you keep looking and get your mind in a good place you will survive. Work is work. You can do a lot of different things to earn a living. I am a caregiver now. I love it. It's the most stress free environment ever. You'll find your place in this world. We have to keep on keeping on. One foot in front of the other. Wipe your tears honey. Life is too short to let the bastards get you down. In a few years you'll look back and this won't even matter. Just a speed bump to get where your going.

Angel. Whenever I transitioned employment, I realized it was a blessing no matter the circumstance. In short, you resigned. You were not ā€œfired.ā€ You gave notice first. At will employment is a two way street. The conditions of your employment were not to your liking & you you requested reasonable accommodation. A good employer will reasonably accommodate your request for continued employment. A bad employer will do just what your former employer did. You were not a no call no show. You notified of your request for reassignment or leave of absence. Donā€™t let employers bully you! Be grateful it ended when it did and donā€™t stress the past. Your future employer may not contact your former employer without your permission. You are a good employee & any employer will see that. Reason for leaving: resignation
