Pills and Bills

My doctor is recommending that I up my anxiety meds that I just started because I do not feel they are working. One the one hand, she's a doctor and they know what they are doing. She's trying to help me.

On the other hand, I have FEELINGS about Big Pharma and the over prescription of medications. I am a firm believer that most things can be overcome by good ol fashioned hard work. I of course understand that there are instances when medication is needed, I just think the system is abused so the rich can stay rich and the masses can become zombies.

But I need to pay my bills, so I need to work. I can't work because my anxiety is through the roof recently. I'm caught between advice and my morals.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has a song called "Antidepressants are so so not a big deal" and i think it almost perfectly reflects why I'm so freaken opposed to more drugs.

Hi there! First and foremost, I had/have the same mindset that you do when it comes to medication. I was diagnosed with Severe Anxiety/ Depression about 5 years ago but I have always experienced it. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that while doctors technically are the ones that we trust to prescribe medication to us and it usually works for the most part don’t get me wrong, we also have a choice in what we do or take. For me, I tried out the medications that they were suggesting and if they made me feel weird or too “unlike” myself, then I made sure to go back to them and tell them that I wasn’t comfortable with this and should try another one or maybe just see if the medication that I’m already on will do it’s job. As for the job thing, that is something that you have to be comfortable going back to. My sophomore year of high-school was absolutely awful. I would wake up and just cry and cry and stay home and sleep. I ended up fighting my school to let me do online school and that was the best option for me at the time. If you’re uncomfortable at your current job, there are tons of online job opportunities that you could look into, especially with the pandemic going on. There are hundreds of companies that are looking for part time, full time, or even temporary staff! I hope everything works out for you because you deserve a happy and stress-free life. Have a great rest of your day and try to allow happy thoughts to cloud those negative ones!

I support whatever you decide. It's up to you. I would try everything before taking more meds though.

No, you can’t think that way. Anxiety and depression are illnesses like any other. Would you be so suspicious if it were diabetes and they prescribed insulin? I hope your answer is no. Is the medication a generic? That should ease some of your fears. My doctor has added hydroxyzine at night for anxiety. It is an old antihistamine that knocks you out. No chance of addiction. I have to take the lowest dose because it packs a punch for me. Others don’t have that problem. Ask about it. It is really calming. Good luck.
