Hi dbeck128,

from my experiences and from my readings, you can boost your metabolism by being physically active. Eating clean is a great start for sure but adding regular and consistent exercises will give you even more results and make you feel more energetic.

It doesn't have to be intense but rather regular. Also adding simple steps to your daily routine such as walking to the store or to work and standing up in the bus for example. Standing up by itself demands more energy to your body than sitting which is a simple way to activate your metabolism.

I wish you the best luck!

Excellent work:) keep at it, you will see results.

I have weight problems because of my medications. I have tried various diets, sad to say I have just had moderate suggestion. I would also welcome any suggestions. I am at a loss

I'm right there with you. Hypothyroidism has completely screwed my weight up. Maybe we can motivate each other. I want a doctors help. Like what should I be doing?! Lol

in reply to dbeck128

Good idea, in my case they are reducing medications because of my age.

Most of the problems I have may be steroids among the Cox 2 Inhibitors or the other drugs I am taking, they have managed to reduce my Pain by using various vitamins like B12 and D3 so my joints and tendons seem to be improving. If that is the case then I get sorted, will be able to exercise more

I love swimming. I swim every day in the summer. Something about the water calms my anxieties.

C.O.N.S.I.S.T.E.N.C.Y.

Do running and gym 3-5 times a week (I would not recommend 5 for a newbie as you may simply not have enough motivation or will to strictly go that often), but you should prioritize your workouts over parties or resting.

And you will start seeing results very soon if you are consistent. I recall first time I started getting bulging muscle when I got so caught up in being aesthetic, I went to gym almost at every opportunity I got.

If you want to get lean, instead of muscled (?) then you should concentrate on running and exercising the big muscles. The "Stronglifts 5x5" is actually really good basis. Add lots of running (you can do it outside gym btw, much more pleasant) and you are set.

.

The other non-exercise big thing is FOOD. 1. You need healthy food, i.e. avoid sugars and saturated fat. Eat animal fat and milk instead. Try to eat something simple like eggs, rice, chicken, instead of overcooked meats and vegetables. 2. You need to know your macros, i.e. carbohydrate and protein intake. When I was lifting to grow muscle, I ate something like 40% proteins - egg whites, certain cheeses, low fat milk, whey protein shakes. Proteins are the bricks, Carbohydrates are the money for builders. Interestingly, when you load your body with nutrients, your craving for sugars and fats vanish.

If you get past newbie phase, you can try very mentally demanding, but effective ketogenic diet - i.e. you will reduce carbohydrate intake (rice, curd, macaroni), and mostly consume proteins (meat, eggs etc), your body will be forced to compensate and will start turning your own fat tissue into a type of carbohydrates (ketons) to compensate. It is something what happens with escimos, when they have to survive eating only seal meats for months. Ketons burn up fat fast, but is very metnally taxing as you will crave eating fatty carb foods all the time.

3. Find good calorie calculator or even food plan generator and actually follow it. Always remember that sweet drinks and alcohol and alike are full of unneeded sugars.

.

And finally you need MOTIVATION. Personally I always was sort of the weak guy, and I recall getting obsessed with my heroes like Bruce Lee, Schwarzenegger, and started desiring to have a body like theirs. Of course part of it was desire to be sexy, but I desired to have goals and achievements before that. I also was a fan of Zyzz, who (while roid user) was actually very inspiring. I wanted THAT life, I wanted to be desired and hot and have girls looking in amazement and so on. That kept me motivated for quite a long time.

I can attest that Schwarzenegger's "just keep pushing" attitude probably made my results come much faster than average. I just kept pushing for more reps, more weight, even when I really mentally and physically did not want it anymore at that moment.

.. For proof - I grew pretty damn big and get big arms, chest (yeah, that was amazing to have muscled chest for the first time in my life) and feeling of power and achievement was amazing. It, like, followed me all the time everywhere. Confidence and extra testosteron is amazing.

And girls, I discovered, only needed a little fitness. They were all over my awkward ass even when I got a little fitter. I realized my aims far surpass those of simply being sexually desirable.

I strongly advise you to follow through, find motivation, and DESIRE the result. And it will come no doubt. Just keep doing, no matter what. No. matter. what.

It's so hard whenever you try and try and the scale wont budge. That's what is happening. I will admit I havent been eating like I should.. I get upset, I want to quit. But I WANT to live a better lifestyle. I have always had an emotional attachment to food. But I know its time to get better and eat healthier. But now when I'm bored I don't have anything to do! Cause I always ate whenever I was bored... lol. I lost 2 pounds now the scale wont budge. So frustrated with myself.

I am going to try and start the gym next week -its hard to between work and kids. Have you had any success? I need some reassurance this will eventually happen!

Dude I went from pretty scrawny 160lbs to about 211 with low fat. Looked neat as fu**ak. I can say it all works great and have many many benefits outside gym - you learn consistency, concentration, determination, willpower. It all goes hand in hand and helps you in business, relationships, and - mental state. When you can go on despite negative feelings, your mental problems fade away as they lose any power over you.

While I have been doing less sports this year, I crave to get back, I hate my little stomach Ihve grown, and I need my bulky chest and arms back, lol. At one point about 2 yrs ago I even had pretty massive 6pack, which was result of hard training, but also really proper eating.

.

Regarding your scale - depends if you are going purely for fat loss or muscle gain. If you are a man and exercise hard, you should expect to lose little weight (mostly only "hanging" fat is the really unneeded body mass), but instead look leaner, as your fat tissue is replaced by musch smaller, but denser muscle tissue.

Try eating properly - smaller portions more often, running or biking more. Look in mirror, try to balance your workouts, so you grow all over.

Doing 5x5 stronglifts is good for all cases, be it muscle or leaning. (note - you do not do all those lifts in one sportsday, there's system to do some on one day, some on another).

If you are a female, mostly just eat less sugars and run.

Eating right and exercise will help your metabolism. I did a test many years ago called a resting metabolism that told me how many calories I burned at rest. My score was as low as the machine went. Very discouraging as it meant I had to eat very low calories and exercise alot. The good part is a year or two later we repeated the test and it was normal. It just takes me forever to lose weight plus Im not always compliant as I het tired of trying. Looking back, Ive lost 55 lb so far, it has been over a decade Im embarrassed to say. I am on and off the wagon, lol. So I guess the best advice is dont quit. Enjoy the journey. The more you exercise, the more you will learn to enjoy it, have more energy, mood will improve. Dont expect fast results. Just think everytime you exercise, your body is saying thankyou.

I think that's my problem

I expect to see immediate results 😖 I wanted to lose a good 40 pounds by July. I guess I'm being too hard on myself. I hated water but since I've been drinking it a lot more it isnt so bad.

in reply to dbeck128

Its really hard to hang in there when there are no quick rewards one can see. I think the biggest thing is dont give up and quit. I was on and off alot with my exercise and eating habits but never gave in to my lack of compliance. You can do this.

Eat clean.. no gluten, no red meat these are hard to digest so ur body work harder to do it then slows metabolism.

Also try no bread... i stopped all bread... and the weight just dropped off... never eaten it since and that was 2 Years ago.

Weight has stayed off...

Plus i never realised until i stopped how bad it made me feel.. bloated and lethargic.

Also every now and again do a fast day... the 5:2 diet is fantastic.. fasting is well known to b good for ur heart, liver, digestive system, diabetes and so many other things plus it will train ur body to not eat as much...

Also it a fact exercise of some sort helps ur mokd and metabolism... so find something u like... one day u dont feel like being to energetic do yoga if u feel extra anxious run it out even if it just round the local park
