MY SON “BABY”

Greetings all,

I was PMing with one of our members and told her about my parrot, “Baby” who’s like a son to me. She asked if I’d post a picture of him.

He’s an African Senegal parrot. They have a lifespan of 20 years. In a few months, Baby will be 32. And he’s still going strong. Back in July 1988 I walked into a bird store and saw this beautiful little baby bird eating a strawberry. He and I looked at each other, and I bought him. Within an hour at home we bonded.

Animals are great especially with helping to calm depression and anxiety. Their love is so unconditional. And they bring such joy.

I’m lucky that my son has a functional father.

He mumbles. Though when I’m on the phone and I laugh he mimics it. Pretty funny. Other than that he can speak his name. It’s just too cute.

Always wanted a parrot....actually did buy one once an African grey ....bought it from the local paper ....thinking we could bond and talk to each other in our time of need ....turned out apparently there are 2 types of African grey talkers ....and the type that just want to kill you every time they get the chance 😳it was angry.

We have two Greys. They are alternately sweet and want to eat a finger for dinner. Gotta be able to read their eyes. Also the male likes me and the female likes my husband. Maybe you had a boy. They talk up a storm. Great company but no cuddling.

I was doing a lot of manual work at the time so needed the fingers ....it was a battle of wits over feeding it ...as it would climb down it’s cage and sit in wait......lost a lot of weight though...definitely didn’t want to talk

Oh it did believe me....had a cocktatiel too ....Bruce ....because they are Australian ....he took the same shine to me but loved my partner....just didn’t like me loving her too ....unfortunately for me he was always out of the cage

My boy says, "Want some," whenever we go into the kitchen. He eats like a pig. The other one answers the phone if it rings (in the house or on TV). They both say kiss me. Like that's going to happen.

One day years ago I was swishing mouth rinse and had to put Baby back in the cage. As I put him on my finger he reached up and bit my nose hard which drew blood. Oh he knew he was a bad birdy for that. I say, time for night night and cover his cage. If I do that during the daytime he knows he was naughty. He’s extremely jealous when I’m near him if I’m on the phone or have anything in my mouth. Go figure. Other than that he’s a sweetheart.

Glad to hear you have Greys. I figure after Baby leaves the earth I’m going to get a Grey. I love them too.

The best time to buy a bird is when they’re a baby... from a bird store or someone who raises birds and hand feeds them as a baby. They learn human contact at an early age.

Years ago I bought a 2ish year old cockatoo from Craigslist. When I got him home he always wanted to feast on my fingers. And he was a screamer. So be didn’t work out.

As for my parrot Baby, he was just turning 6 months when I bought him. And he was human raised after hatching before I bought him.

Birds are also selective. Some will only bond to human males or human females. Baby though is jealous of my Hubby. Baby would love to feast one of his fingers. Crazy bird... gotta love him tho.

Oh how I wish I had feathered wings and could fly. Then I wouldn’t have to deal with airports and crammed in planes. Plus I’d naturally fly first class all the way.

He's great. He must have come with an extended warranty. You have been blessed with his longevity.

I totally agree. Nothing like an animal to rely on when things aren't going well. Unconditional love is something you only get from animals and kids. At least that's my experience.

There's such an empty feeling when you lose that.

Oh my goodness...he is gorgeous! Green too my favorite color... Just goes to show with the right owner ...lifespan don't mean a thing , huh? You've taken fantastic care of him obviously....

I used to have a yellow canary that was a champion singer, hence the name Champ....he would alert me when someone pulled in my driveway...birds are very smart......

Aren’t birds a trip?!

When I got my parrot, from early on he mumbled, “Vayvee.” So that became Baby. Usually I usually give my pets more clever names, but Baby it was. What a wonderful coincidence we both have a bird named Baby. Well at 32 Baby still hasn’t laid any eggs so I figure he’s been a boy since.

When the day comes that Baby passes and goes to the big bird in the sky, I’d love to get a Grey. However at almost 62 the Grey would outlive me. He’d have to make my funeral arrangements. And he’d better have it catered! Still I have a hunch Baby will be around for quite some time.

But yes, a pet bird is something else. And with 4 cats that would love to dine on him, Baby defends himself very well with his killer beak.
