Hello. I am looking for advice on getting a job while having social anxiety disorder. I have found myself missing interviews lately because I get too worked up about going. I often fear rejection.

You are not alone. I deal with social anxiety too. I think the best thing to do is find a job where you don't have to work around other people

I used to be the ultimate self-sabotager for every interview I went on. I would be so nervous that I would not even know what the interviewer was asking or what I was saying. I found that when I’m interviewing for something that is really important to me, like when I interviewed for graduate school and for my internships, I was able to push the nerves aside because in that moment, the consequences of working towards my dream job was way more important than any nerves I felt. A tool I find really helpful is looking at the threat of the situation versus the facts or thinking of a long term goal and which option will make more sense to help you get there. For example, my goal is to get a job and I have an interview coming up and I’m nervous, I could stay home because I’m too nervous which will mean I won’t get the job and therefore won’t reach my goal or I can go on the interview and either reach my goal of getting the job or get more interview experience that will help me be prepared for my next interview. I hope you know that you’re not alone and that any rejection is not because you are not good enough it just means it is not the right fit for both yourself and the company and there will always be something else out there will be :)

I have anxiety in social situations, especially when I'm being evaluated. When I did interviews, I would try to over-prepare, learn as much as I could about the position, and take the viewpoint that I was there to interview *them*. It was about seeing if they were the right fit for me, or not. That took some of the pressure off.

Looking for jobs, or places to live, is just plain hard and draining at times. But you can do it. There is a place for you out there. Keep on going.
