I always have told them my circumstances and fill them in. After that I got a few questions and made a plan for therapy. It's kind of an appointment to get to know what your expectations are. It will be good. Just be completely honest and go from there.

I agree with Melhall, you will probably be nervous that is to be expected, so you need to feel the therapist out, see if you can gel. I have a wonderful woman, I can lay my soul bare to her, but there has been a couple of duds in my life (I am 77), and in need of help after a major depression/severe anxiety, these have been dogging me all my life. She is a sweetheart and is helping me to heal. She makes me hot chocolate and has little snacks for us to eat. I took her a bar of chocolate today, she was pleased. If you can, listen to yourself, your inner voice will generally not let you down. I wish you well, Send you Love & Hugs.......Sprinkle 1......

The first one is an assessment. They will ask a lot of questions in order to get a feel for what is happening so they can then determine what course of action would suit your recovery and which points need to have the most focus. The very first counselling appointment I had, I cried all the way through it. Through my incoherent babble down the phone, she still managed to sort me out so while drugs can be necessary in certain circumstances, I honestly believe the counselling is far more valuable. Don't be afraid of the questions, be open, even if you think something might sound silly. Raise points that you think are relevant and definitely enjoy the Custard Tart!

Hi Lunazay,

I have found over the years that the first therapy session is the most important. Drug pushers are a big no. If the therapist seems judgy of your needs, that's not going to help you as in future sessions you may not feel comfortable opening up.

A thorough assessment is a necessity. This is to rule out deeper issues that may require specialized cognitive and drug therapy.

With my last therapist, she had me fill out checklists that rated the degree of my depression. I found this really helpful as it gave her a guide of what she was dealing with. She had me fill out those checklists once a month and amazingly it showed my mood improve over time.

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble on so I shall finish with, turn on your spidey senses (your gut feeling) and listen to it!

Good luck in your journey!

Hugs ๐Ÿ˜˜

You know it's interesting that just making a move to getting help makes us feel better. About my experience with a new therapist - I had to do a questionnaire on a computer about my symptoms and then when I met the therapist he told me a little about his background and we had a nice conversation about what I expected then we decided the course of treatment, which was CBT because that's what my insurance covers. He told me we could explore the root of my depression though (which was really what I wanted). It was a wonderful experience and really helped.
