Anxiety over surgery won’t end

I have just had a hip replacement done, and I really worked up my anxiety worrying about it. My surgery has been done and was a complete success, but I don’t seem to be able to get back to “normal.” I am feeling very lost. While I had many people who have sent cards and complimented me walking so well, and yet I still feel alone.

It's natural to worry in those types of circumstances. People may not recognize this time as being important from your viewpoint. It may help to reach out if no one sees the need for encouragement and support. It's good that you atleast have this site to go to.

Maybe you need more time, after all that not an easy recovery.

Hi MsJun

Hip replacement surgery, though routine these days, is still major surgery. You can forgive yourself for worrying about it.

I’m guessing your op was quite recent? Well done for your speedy recovery. Walking well is a great start and the lack of relentless pain is something to be celebrated...isn’t it? The exercises you were advised to do are very, very important.

Depression, feeling down, lost and alone can be caused by anaesthetic and or facing one’s own mortality. The physical and emotional stress of any surgery can wobble the bravest soul.

Carry on with the exercises, carry on walking, invite friends out for coffee and a chat. Come here too 🤗. Be patient with yourself whilst you are healing.

If those negative feelings persist, check them out with your Doctor.

I have a matching pair of hip replacements. I enjoy walking holidays because I can! Also swimming and gym. A friend in Wyoming said she would save me the slimmest mustang horse for me to ride on a wilderness holiday if ever I get there from Essex, England. Maybe one day. Want to come with?

Hi MsJun, I can understand your anxiety. I will have a right heart cath soon and I am not a big fan of surgery or anymore testing; however, I am grateful that medical insurance has done their job in allowing me to get the help that I need.
