Oh poor you as that can be painful. I would wait for the treatment to start working and when you are better go back and ask for a spirometry test. This is the one which determines whether or not you have asthma. You can't have this done at the moment as your costochondritis would affect the results.
Even if you do have asthma the chances are that it will be mild and very controllable with an inhaler or 2. Millions have asthma and have no real problems with it. I myself do. x
Well I would go back and speak to your doctor and ask if they think you could have asthma. The asthma nurse will usually do a test but I think you have to be referred to them first. x
Can you make an appointment with the Asthma Nurse? As you don't appear to have had any Asthma test?
Were you given any pain relief such as Ibuprofen for the Costochondritis?
However, some doctors say that Asthma sufferers should be cautious about taking Ibuprofen. Could try tablets or Ibuprofen gel?? Could phone and ask to speak peak to a GP about pain relief advice.
You could also pop a post on the Asthma forum on here. (Asthma UK community forum ).
If you still have pain you could buy some ibuprofen in any supermarket and take with or after food for a couple of days. See if it helps. Or Phone GP or make an appointment to see a different GP at the practice.
You could also ask for an appointment to see the Asthma Nurse.
Why are you scared of Asthma?
Worrying makes pain worse.
Avoid lifting and keep warm.
A nice meal with one of two ibuprofen, then put your feet up & relax.
This doesn't sound like asthma to me. You had it as a small child and have been free of it since just like my grandson now 27. When your doctor listened to your chest with the stethoscope they were listening for the tell tale sound of asthmatic breathing, clearly they found no sign of this. But have the asthma spirometry test anyway for total reassurance, specially if you live in the u.k. where all medical care is free.
It doesn't sound like costochondritis either. Did your doctor press a certain point in your ribs which caused you pain? That is the acid test for costochondritis (the inflammation of cartilage between the breast bone and the ribs). If your doctor didn't do the press sensitive test and it proved positive then your doctor is just making an educated guess. Costo clears up on its own after a few months by the way.
So if it isn't asthma and it isn't costochondritis what is it? It's the elephant in the room: anxiety! Yes, anxiety can cause tension of the muscles in the chest. Hence the tight feeling. Lots of people have reported the same symptom here over recent weeks, most of them mistakenly believe it's heart trouble which it isn't.
When your anxiety resolves and your nervous system returns to normal this tightness in the chest will pass. That's my opinion but I'm not a doctor, just someone streetwise to the wiles of anxiety.
