Too scared to eat

Why do I become anxious every day when I get ready to sit down and eat? Breakfast is the most difficult meal.

Unreasonable anxiety fears!

Therapist and Psych. don't have any answers except to use the tools of breathing, tapping, etc.

What do you do when that happens to you?

I’m the same way and I understand the frustration. I try to start slow and take small bites until my appetite is back or my nauseousness subsides a little. I’ve found that it’s easier to eat blander breakfast foods even though it might not be as fun; bananas, Cheerios, toast.

Easy to heat and eat are my rules now while I breathe and shake to eat most meals.

Wonder what I'm afraid of?

I’m not sure what really triggers my anxiety in those situations either, I’ve always loved food and eaten a lot of it but now I just can’t and I don’t know why

Talk Therapist is at a loss to explain the eating anxiety.

A new game show I'll call-- Stump The Psych!

Not funny? Oh well it keeps me distracted from the anxiety.

I have so many issues they don't know what to do with me anymore.

Aging does bring more physical and mental issues.

Maybe the food anxiety is really anxiety for what comes next? When I have to go somewhere I get nausea and abdominal pains. It is worse if I eat first. Sometimes the promise to myself that I will follow through with something in the house, causes nausea when I go to eat. Feeling useless can cause the nausea. I don't know if this helps, but I hope you feel better..

What a great clue.

I'm mostly housebound. Nothing motivates me. Trouble concentrating and able to recognize the depression now.

I push and push until just one project like folding one load of laundry can overwhelm me. If I don't push, don't take control of myself, I'll just keep getting worse. I feel stuck.

Health problems growing. Aging Is A Full Time Job.

Maybe, just maybe, eating means starting a new cycle of lack of support and nothingness.

Just learned that my 3 meds should be taken during various meals instead of only with water as prescribed. That sure has made the food anxiety worse.

Humnnnn. How to control it could help to change my attitude.

I'm open to suggestions and willing to try a new way to stop this terrible growing problem. Taking baby steps to tackle each problem area.

It is hard to change things, even if not changing is hurting us. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I can do what I want to do anytime. No pressure. Just starting a thing makes that thing easier.

Trouble eating is a symptom of anxiety, no? Or a side effect of medication? It’s both of those for me...

The health professionals haven't found an explanation for my eating anxiety. Some one on this site suggested it might be because we know the steps available after the meal.

Depression. Lack of Support. Loneliness. Lack of self motivation. Financial issues, etc.

That’s understandable. I’m sorry 😐 you are going that. I try to distract myself on my phone when that happens. 😓

Diagnosis is Anxiety Disorder. Over 400 million people have the disorder. Then there are the people who suffer, don't go for help and don't report it.

Has the old mental illness stigma attached to it.

Has any of your therapist ever suggested you meditate for 20 minutes before breakfast? that can be very helpful to calm your anxiety. I would have the foodstuffs ready, plus some relazing tea or whateve hot beverage you might crave that is on you diet. I find blueberry white tea appealing, but everyone has a fav. When you meditate, use a mantra if they ever gave you one. Many use Ohm. If you PM me I can give you a special sanskrit one and will tell you what it means if your therapist approves. Sanskrit words help the harmonics within the brain, and affect the alpha, beta, theta and Delta waves, while organizing the left and right hemispheres of the brain. There is also a website you could try to listen to see if this calms you down while you eat. mynoise.net I find it very soothing in many ways. Some have a hard time opening, but once open, you do not have to adjust, just play and stop when you wish. Nice peaceful tones and high pitches help calm the autonomic nervous system. Low and loud sounds have been proven to exacerbate the nervous system if you have had trauma.

Thanks for ideas. I wake up startled and scared. Experimented with staying in bed to keep breathing, jumping out of bed right away-- then what do I do with my groggy and scared self? Tapping, etc.

Maybe there is a lotion I can put on during night when I wake up several times. Gastro Cancer doesn't accept medicine making me sick.

Ask about Bach Drops at you local health food stores and then check with the docs first. They have a special one just for sleep and also some for nausea, remedies for almost everything and they have beene around for many, many years. Go on line and see what they can do.

I am sure you diet is overwhelming and can cause just more anxiety as it is direct line to your nausea, so it is no wonder it strikes fear into your healing body. Deep breathing helps significantly to the healing process if your body can tolerate deep breath in but an even longer, slow breath out. Three nice long ones before you eat. If it makes you yawn that is good.

The goal is to calm your entire autonomic nervous system and the nerve in the stomach is called the dorsal vagal. It is designed to provide you with your nutrients but when anxious it does not work as well.

Think of a soothing wondrous place you have been before you sit down to eat. There are wonderful guided imagery exercises that can calm down the system if you can find some on line. Rick Hansen has a few on his website. Hope and healing I wish for you.

It's so scary to dread eating. Know I have to eat or I feel even more sick.

Will give it a go to meditate before trying to get the beast to calm down.

youtube.com is free.

It is the fear that is getting in the way and that is what you need to calm when you have these tremendous worries to contend. Give yourself time and allow the healing to take hold and do its magic. If you can get the my noise.net and play that while you eat might be affective for now as a trial to find what works. I have to talk to my fear often. In walking fears, at times, I actually have to click my fingers as a distraction to the fear starting to overwhelm. Distracting it.

When I was learning to walk again, I had to click my fingers to take my mind away from fear. PT had me doing specially on stairs as they terrified me. I still have to do once in awhile when going down a curb.

That is why I think my noise.net might be helpful as that distraction while you are eating.

YES! Rescue Remedy has saved me from going to full throttle panic.

I recommend the Spray. Works within 20 min like most ingested products.

Is that what they call Bach Drops. I thought I recognized the name change. They have them for numerous issues, i.e. nausea, sleep ( this is my fav when I used to get to sleep and it would not come.)

BTW have you been in groups to help others and compare notes as helping others is really healing.
