Routine advice

Experimenting with your body and mind is great way to learn your strengths, and to discover new things about how you can improve yourself.

Today I want to introduce you to a small morning routine I started.. barely 10 minutes long, and which has some unexpected, but really working elements. Makes anxiety and depression go away.

This routine is inspired by Marcus Aurelius - Roman emperor, who was a notable stoic - i.e. despite his high position he was into belief, that human must be emotionally strong, and not fear life in any form, and assess reality as it is. He was notable for his strict life, and being unfazed by external events.

This is PERFECT for anxiety and depression sufferers. Also doing this routine made me excited in a positive way, because it is odd, I felt like noone else does it, so I perhaps are going one step ahead, and it worked.

..

So the routine you do in the morning [+ I'll try to explain why]:

1. 30 minutes before you have to wake up, you will descend from your bed and sleep on the floor, without blanket or cover. [This way you will leave your comfort zone psychologically, and as time goes you will learn to enjoy this odd uncomfortable state. you will learn, that there is nothing to fear losing everything you possess, as you have no problem sleeping on the floor, and you will then feel much more brave when you need to leave comfort zone in any other situation]

..

2. Stand up and make your bed RIGHT AFTER your morning alarm rings. No sleep in-s [Imagine you are in army and there is no other way. This will fill you with a feeling of accomplishment. making bed seems a small thing, but it will start your morning with a victory over world]

..

3. Go to shower and pour cold water over yourself for one minute. [this is hard, but will give you incredible physical boost (all small blood vessels will get alive), and psychologically you will be able to think only about the coldness. I found it easiest to do by just saying to yourself "if navy seals can swim in ice, I can take cold showers". This coldness will purify your mind and soul].

..

4. Spend few minutes imagining worst scenarious you can have that day. You are late, your date leaves you, you miss deadline. vizualize them. Then stop and move to next point [this is VERY IMPORTANT point. It is completely opposite of modern "just think about good". You vizualize worst scenarios firstly because you acknowledge possibilities of failure and thus you will actually less likely to fail now! By vizualizing the bad outcomes, you also mentally prepare yourself, if failure actually happens. You won't break mentally. This is AMAZING point. Just 5 minutes - vizualize (I must stress vizualization, not just making a mental list of sentences), slowly one by one - then stop. I tried doing it all every day and this definitely made me MUCH LESS stressed.]

..

5. Now.. while you still are in your little meditation spot from before - acknowledge to yourself - "My potential and possibilities are limitless. BUT - time is limited". Think about the value of these words. [The point is - if you believe in limitless potential (which is basically true) that means you can achieve anything. However time is limited - both daily or lifetime - if your potential is limitless, it would be a a extreme privilege to waste time for other things, rather than your potential. Avoid wasting time, it is your treasure.]

..

6. Write a short very laconic bullet point plan for your day - how you are going to achieve! Keep it short and simple. [Psychologically it will be much easier to have some sort of "skeleton" for your day, so any other unexpected things won't bother you that much, You will have your priorities. If you keep fulfilling all your planned points, you will feel incredible satisfaction of being victorious constantly].

Update - been doing this routine all week, starting last Sunday.

Observed pros:

1. Sleeping of floor is weirdly fun.

2. Mentally imagining things go worse actually got me through really incredible stress situation just yesterday. I was calm and succeeded over incredible deadlines (there were many tasks, and they all happened at the same time).

3. Planning works well, I really felt accomplishment, when I striped out the tasks I had set. I kept it simple like - a) go to gym b) wash clothes c) complete 2 hour worth of paperwork for my personal project that I will need in a week.
