A silly post for your Tuesday...

I've heard of intimate gathering of fans at a sporting event, but this is taking that too far! lol I didn't know so many fans came dressed as empty seats lol

This is a 1985 photo of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum during a home game of the USFL's Los Angeles Express. As you can see, the fan support is just tremendous! lol

Your pal,

Brian :)

I remember the USFL! That was actually some pretty good football. As for LA, the Rams don't have much support either. Not exactly rabid sports fans like we are in Chicago area. Kind of showing my age a bit remembering the USFL as I do. Remember the ABA?

The USFL got off to a great start. They stole Csonka, Kiick, and Morris - the entire backfield - from the recent champion Miami Dolphins. But, as you can see, things kind of petered out. There are more people suited up than there are in the stands.

Actually, jkl, you're thinking of the World Football League, which played from 1974-75. Csonka, Kiick and Warfield signed with the Memphis Southmen of the WFL. On a side note, Larry Csonka eventually did go to the USFL, but as General Manager of the expansion Jacksonville Bulls in 1984. If anyone is interested in watching USFL games in their entirety, hop over to YouTube and look up user USFLForever. He's got lots of regular season and playoff games uploaded. :)

Sorry boss, I got my failed leagues mixed up. Old age does that to you. So the WFL was the league that had a touchdown worth 7 points instead of 6. It began in 1974 - that much I do remember - when I believe there was an NFL players' strike, so they got extra attention that year.

Yep. But so many teams were rife with debt that some folded mid-season. They went ahead with a second season in 1975 but the whole league collapsed mid-season. One of the main reasons was the Chicago Winds franchise tried to lure Joe Namath away from the Jets. When Namath decided to resign with the Jets, the Winds blew away lol Not long after that, the entire league folded because basically their television deal was dependent on getting Namath.

I will defer to your knowledge on these matters. But I will pass (pun intended) on watching the USFL games. I'll find something else to watch. Thanks for the info, though.
