School & Heath Anxiety

My youngest started preschool today and I’m having a hard time seeing beyond the germs and sickness that come along with that. My oldest was sick a lot her first year of school and it traumatized me. I worry the same will happen with my youngest and I don’t feel strong enough to cope with it. If my kids cough, I panic inside and think the worst. Any thoughts or advice on this?

Wow! I was exactly the opposite. I worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit when my kids were school-aged and they had to be almost bleeding to death to get my attention! They are all healthy adults and rarely visit a doctor! I do want to caution you about overreacting to their illnesses as you can end up raising hypochondriacs and people who want to medicate for every little thing. They could also wind up with health anxiety which I see here. Don’t panic!! Childhood illnesses are a part of growing up. If they’re seriously ill, you will know it! It’s all part of being a parent that cannot be escaped. Try not to overreact for their benefit...🙂🌷🙂

Thank you! Yes, that’s a big concern of mine. I don’t want my kids to end up like me in this way. I’m very aware of how I react. Thanks again for the comment.

Good luck! Hopefully your 2nd will have a wider range of immunity because of her older sibling! You’re a good Mom! 🌹

Ah, thank you! Yes, I’m hoping that’s the case, too. He caught every virus she brought home her first year of preschool.

My grandson started pre-kindergarten, last year ,he came home with everything! Of course we caught it ! He was about 31/2yrs old . He was sick alot ,finally had tonsils out n adnoids out n tubes in his ears ! Hes fine now ,gets his normal colds . We also found out he has sleep apna, under control now, sleeps better, looks better. Well we can't lock our kids up n hid away . It's just important for parents to Not send your kids to school sick . That's how it spreads on n on .

Are you going through any therapy to help you with your health anxiety?....cause its an unfortunate thing that little ones do come home with everything everyone else has...I can't stand it because I catch everything...but I've had to just take my Zinc with Vit. C, and have Tamiflu on hand for the big flu.... other than that....it's the way they get their immunity.

Absolutely. I’m all for strengthening their immune system, too. I’ve had health anxiety since I was 11 and ironically, I’ve never been seriously ill (knock on wood) or hospitalized. I so don’t want my kids to become like this so I am very conscious of it and work hard to keep it to myself. The other day my daughter had an ear ache. I put garlic oil drops inside her ear and the chiropractor adjusted her. No pediatrician visit. In fact, I stay far away from doctors best I can unless absolutely necessary. I’m a big believer in letting the body do what it needs to heal on it’s own without intervention. I’ve been in therapy on and off for 20 years. It has yet to help.

hmm... I hear you on natural remedies.... I'm not pushing this stuff... but I really am finding it more and more interesting and did have some relief with it at 5%... CBD oil.... I am still working out the right percentage concentration for the best results and dosage, but did find it calming me down... will post after my next trial with a more concentrated 10-15% CBD oil... it's pricey, but worth the try, so I have to wait for funds again.
