Yes it is a catch 22 and an oxymoron because alcohol is a depressant. The first couple of drinks put you in a euphoria state, but being an alcoholic...you want even more of that feeling, and so...you keep drinking until it now has turned into something else. I have been in recovery for decades.... and drank to self medicate. 1 in 3 alcoholics also suffer from depression...it's called being 'dual diagnosed'. I don't because I can't. I have a reaction to alcohol that someone who does not have the disease....'a normie'...would not have. That's the difference. Some people can drink or leave it, it isn't an issue....some drink only a few drinks everyday and can still be an alcoholic, a high functioning alcoholic....they hold down jobs, don't loose jobs, or relationships, but none the less their liver is being destroyed.

Hi Bynextfall and Welcome... Seems like you have the solution to your problem the thing is how are you going to address this. Your name "Bynextfall" caught my attention. Do you have a deadline as to next Fall being when you are free from your addiction to alcohol?

We all reach out for help and relief when hurting emotionally. What we choose can harm us even more. Then it becomes a decision as to which came first. Professional therapy is the way to go. Using alcohol as your "go to" partner is bringing you down more. The time is now to kick that partner to the curb. He's not your friend but your enabler.

I speak of this through my own experience with Benzos. Using something as a crutch for a while is okay. Once that crutch becomes a part of your life (in my case) for 30 years, it was time to let go. and I did. And I'm here to tell about it.

We're here to support and understand and not judge. We share our own experiences in hopes that it helps another. Glad to see you reached out to this group.
