Suck it up

My Uncle said this to me today. Being stressed out is basically part of life if you want to provide for your family and have a good life. I feel a lack of compassion for anxiety sufferers. Suck it up buttercup is what he's saying. Is he correct?

I don't think it's correct. I think yes, everybody suffer in this life and we all experienced horrible things at some points in our life. But it's not right to ignore this and not keep an eye out for each other. Nobody has to fight alone and we are all in this together. By sharing our stories and being kind and helping others with their stories, we can all move forward and make each other feel better because anxiety sucks. I am here for you if you need a friend and I am sure all the folks up here are too. Best of luck xoxo.

That’s absolutely not okay! However some of the older generation is not as open and sensitive to mental illness. My mom and I actually talked about this the other day. She said when she was growing up (even when I was growing up in the 90’s) her generation just worked hard and didn’t really know what these feelings were. No one talked about them. So your Uncle might just be saying that because he doesn’t understand mental illness. You should talk to people you feel will understand better and help you with more sensitivity. I wouldn’t let this remark bother you. I hope you feel better ☺️

Thank you. I feel so impressionable right now. I shouldn't listen to him. He is in the older generation category. He's all about family pride. I don't fit that mold and I'm the outsider in my family. I really appreciate you!

Your uncle shouldn't say things like that because they are not true and make you feel worse however you should try to remember that those who don't suffer from things like amxiety and depression can't possibly understand what we are going through. They don't know why regular everyday things like getting up or being productive are hard for those who suffer, so they get frustrated and angry and say things like "Just do it" or "Tell yourself it will be a good day, and it will". I am sorry he said those things to you and want you to know they aren't true and you aren't alone. It probably isn't the last time you'll encounter people and words like these, so do your best to remember they are usually not spoken with hurtful intent.

Even my own husband says things like just breath, it'll be ok. It does not work that way with our brains. Thank you for the reminder!

Honestly it sounds like your uncle and husband are trying, in their way to help you. It doesn’t sound malicious in any way. If this type of remark is hurtful to you than express your feeling to them.

I agree their intentions are good. No doubt. I'd rather not confront that battle of it being hurtful. I accept their opinions and try to move forward. Not everyone gets it fully. My husband is great and will support me whatever may come. I put alot of guilt on myself
