How to find new friends to avoid being lonely

Any suggestions where to mix around to make genuine friends or good mentor?

Are you sure you are able to fulfill the responsibility of being a friend? I have found people like the idea of having friends but when push comes to shove they drive themselves crazy with the added stress of keeping friendships. I know I fell into that category. The idea of having friends sounds good, but people can be a real pain in the a**. I keep people at arms length.

Have you tried volunteer work or signing up for something like co-ed volleyball? Meetup.com is a site where people get together that have common interest. It doesn't cost anything. There are groups for everything you can think of.
