Hi people. I'm happy to be here. As I just wrote somewhere on my profile, I'm convinced many of the mental issues of many people nowadays are a product of a sick society that puts pressure on us and forces us to be concerned on unimportant things and, what is worse, to be afraid of one another. In other words: there's a political explanation for many of our disorders. I will develop this idea when I figure out how this site works, because I'm not even sure where and for whom I'm posting this. Cheers

Welcome to you !

Thank you for your reply in my post.

Will respond shortly....

All good wishes.im glad you found us 🌺

Keep posting because that is some good insight. I’d like to read more of your thoughts. I’ve been thinking the same thing. There are many here who’d like to delve deeper. Mind constructs are built by those wanting to profit off of our misery so we will buy their product to better fit the “ideal”. Why do you think it’s so insidious and so powerful over us? The way it’s all marketed?

We are educated and raised as to believe in some -in many cases insane- precepts and to act according to them. Here are some of them:

- Human being is selfish by nature

- Everyone is responsible of their own situation, be it economic, mental or social. And therefore:

- The poor are lazy, that's why they're poor; while the rich are hard-working, that's why they're rich. Therefore both deserve their situation.

- Attitude is everything. You can reach everything with a good attitude: from curing your cancer to becoming rich and successful. If your cancer (or whatever illness) doesn't get cured it means that you didn't have the right attitude.

I don't believe in conspiracy theories but, as I said bellow, the fact that so many people believe these and other ideas to be a natural law (true and immutable) have very specific political implications. To give you a very stupid example: if you do believe that everyone is individually responsible for their economic situation you will never vote for a party that promises to redistribute wealth or install universal health care.

So here's what: none of these precepts are natural law, but social constructions and, if you ask me, not only rather silly ones but also extremely destructive in their implications.

Going back to my first idea, that mental health issues often have political explanations (in the sense I explained below, I don't mean institutional-political): I'm not a neurologist or a psychiatrist but I know many disorders are not purely neurological but rather environmentally caused. Social anxiety disorder, which many of us suffer in some degree, is the most perfect example.

Thanks for reading me. I'm interested in everyones' thoughts.

Hi nice to meet you. I wouldn't necessarily agree on the political angle. I think as a society we are too much influenced by the American Dream ie we are a success if we get a big house, good job, kids etc. We should be concentrating much more on personal growth and less on targets which just cause untold stress. x

Thanks for your response.

That's part of what I mean. When I say there's a political explanation I don't mean partisan or governmental, but political in a broader sense. Everything related to human being and its relation to other human beings is political, from the small scale of interpersonal relationships to the big scale of international relations. The American Dream is a political construction. And what is worse than the American Dream is this insane conception that your situation and your happiness depends entirely on you and your own decisions and, therefore, if you are poor, unsuccessful or depressed (to pick just 3 examples) it is only your fault and, therefore, you deserve it.

So according to this stupid theory - that SOOOOOO many people on the planet seem to assume as a natural law!- a person born in a poor family of a poor country living in an unsafe neighborhood has exactly the same chances to do whatever they want as a person born in a rich family of a rich country. That's just insane. And of course this assumption has very specific impacts on people lives. If we believe that everyone is responsible of their own economic situation, why should we have universal health care? No, I'm rich because I deserve it and I want to pay for my own health insurance, not for the lazy poor. And so on and so forth.

Very interesting and eye-opening observations. I wish more people could think this way and see through all the lies and propaganda. People in powerful positions tend to blame the less-fortunate and label them for not being able to pull themselves out of poverty or illness, in order to further their egotistical agendas. One sort of person is “weak” and one has more grit, therefore the “weak” one deserves what they get. You are more “worthy” when you look like “success”. Even if you are profiting off of others’ suffering. Scummy people have a lot of power. Then more scum rises to the top. And women look ugly when we are angry. Tone that down. Smile and shush and make sure you are thin enough. Don’t question. Just consume. We are trained to be spoon-fed all these lies. Thanks again for bringing some critical thinking to the discussion. Mental health is also a battle for truth. The truth will set you free.

Thanks for your words and for sharing your thoughts too, strongheart!

Oh, yes, the chapter on stupid and destructive assumptions on women is particularly long and painful.

I try to speak about this whenever I have the chance to do it. Not about convincing anyone to think like me, but convince them to question pre-assumed ideas, to inform themselves and to build an informed opinion on life related issues. To be able to choose: what drives me in life? and not just to follow stupid rules that destroy us. Yes, truth sets us free, and living in the ignorance makes us slaves. It's a pity that so many choose to be slaves.

You are opening minds and freeing people from mental bondage with your words. They should offer this kind of “education” to younger kids, let them know they are targets for those who want to harm them for money. Wish I’d known this as a teen. I think a lot of teenagers come to this forum for help and they should know they’ve got to fight for truth and think for themselves. The pharmaceutical companies want everyone on their drugs. As if the human condition can be “fixed” with a pill!! Nope. And they’re just getting bigger and bigger. Every one of us has a voice. Your voice Amanda, has changed mine for the better. I’m a bit stronger because of you. My day is lighter and brighter because of you. We can all figure out what makes us strong and follow that toward helping people. It’s the way out of self-inflicted misery. Find your gift and share it. Find your power and use it to free those who are still finding theirs. No matter how down you are, you have the power to lift someone up. This is the way out. Be the light!
