Prozac and sleep disturbance

Yesterday I started taking Prozac (20mg) once a day. I felt ok yesterday, a little foggy maybe, but then I had terrible sleep. I woke up from a vivid nightmare two hours after going to bed and suffered a panic attack. I’ve woken up with panic attacks before starting the Prozac, and usually I can ride it out until I get sleepy again and then I’m fine. This time, I did eventually fall back asleep, but kept waking up every few hours still feeling panicky. Then today when I came home from work I fell asleep and woke up feeling the same way. It’s very scary. Can the Prozac be doing this so soon after starting and at such a low dosage? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I’m afraid to keep taking it, but know I have to be consistent with it. Hoping I’m not alone in this.

Antidepressants can definitely cause vivid dreams or nightmares, but I would call your doctor anyways to let him or her know what's going on. If you just started Prozac a couple days ago, they can probably switch you to something else.
