Any sleep advice?

Hi everyone...

I have been having serious trouble sleeping at night. I could be absolutely exhausted and still not sleep. As soon as I lay down to sleep, my mind starts racing and my heart rate picks up. I haven't gotten a good night's sleep in over two weeks now. I know that being tired is a trigger for my anxiety, but how can I fix it?? Let me know if you have advice. This group is the best :)

Hey Hannah! I’m sorry you’re going thru that at night, I used to have insomnia terribly but but now it’s every now and then and I still hate it, now I have a buzzing sound in my ear when it happens, it’s scary and annoying. I have this app downloaded on my phone called white noise and I pick a nature sound that helps me drift to sleep and also blocks out the buzzing sound. Also turmeric milk tea helps me to relax at night, you can find an easy recipe on Pinterest

It has taken me a lot of trial to see how to help calm myself down at night. I found it helps to keep my mind distracted by reading a book before bed, often I sleep with a small table lamp on because it seems to help me not feel so alone if I have a light on in the room. I have also found it is good not to force it, if I lay down and my mind starts to race I get up and do something small to distract my mind and then go lay down once I have relaxed a little. I also found these small 10 minute meditation sessions through an app Headspace that also help by regulating your breathing and it also runs you though grounding techniques. The meditation app is great because it gives you permission to let you mind wander and then it helps you try to learn to gain control of your thoughts. I feel that was a lot of my problem was trying to force those thoughts out, but by acknowledging them and maybe even journaling it helps to get them out of my mind.

Hi, I have a hard time sleeping also. I usually fall asleep, but am awake a few hours later, and can't get back to sleep. Have you tried melatonin?

If you research sleep hygiene and CBT strategies for getting a good nights sleep you will be well on the way to a better day after the night before

hi i know exactly how u feel and its frustrating bc it effects u on your day to day. i can fall asleep within minutes but staying asleep is the problem. i have tried melatonin 6mg , chamomile tee... but so far nothing seems to work. now iam trying to write things that i have to do 1h prior i go to sleep, write on a journal what went on and feel on that day, a light exercise then just watch a relaxing movie or read a book. i put our ac on the cold side. it works for few hours for me but then i wake up and cant sleep anymore. my doctor says that i need to do a sleep study if this continues for the next 3 months. u may try few of the things and see if it works for you. and if u do the melatoni try the 10mg. good luck

I hate insomnia for all the reasons mentioned! I used to get it and I swear, sometimes stayed awake all night. When I found out my husband cheated on me, I slept 8 hours in one week! (got a sleeping med for that one, which worked but would not recommend).

The best advice I have is just to get up. Watch TV. Read a book, preferably a boring a one. Write in journal. Color. Do anything. Try not to make it too stimulating. I usually found that after a couple hours, I was sleepy and could go back to bed. But there's no point tossing and turning and watching the clock click past another hour.

Now, I just read a textbook for a class. The zzzzz's come on pretty fast! So it you have a textbook around, give it a whirl, ha!

Hi Hannah, I have depression and anxiety and I know exactly what you are going through. I had trouble sleeping and sometimes, would stay up until the sun came out and go to work without any sleep at all. However, I have recently started figuring out what works for me. I hope this helps you at least a bit

1. If I lay in bed and don't fall asleep within a few minutes, I get up and go to a different room. I read something or watch a show (although watching TV before bed is apparently not advisable) and only go back to bed once I am extremely tired

2. Have a very active day - go for a walk, gym, whatever to get me tired by 10 pm

3. I do yoga (but I am not an expert so I don't know whether this is good advice)

I would suggest seeing a doctor as well Hannah. I suffered from my anxiety for years (15 years!) before I sought help. I am in the process of getting therapy and it really helps
