Addison's Patients Are at High Risk of Respiratory Infections and Males with Low Testosterone Levels More Likely to Die From Coronavirus.

I was led down a rabbit hole on Google when researching if taking steroids for Addison's was considered immunosuppressant while completing an NIH "All of Us Research Program" survey on Covid-19. I initially thought that it pertained to those patients with Addison's caused by an autoimmune disorder. But in my query, I landed on two research papers pertaining to Addison's relating to infection and viral response.

"Research has found that people suffering from the adrenal disorder known as Addison's disease suffer from an immune system defect which makes them prone to potentially deadly respiratory infections."

And gents, we need to ensure our testosterone levels due to hypogonadism are in check for bone health, etc. but this was news to me:

Lastly, please heed advice for patients who take replacement steroids (hydrocortisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone or plenadren) for pituitary/adrenal insufficiency:

Please know that it is not my intention to alarm. I just find this relative especially during this pandemic and I feel at times isolated with having Addison's disease itself with its slew of problematic case management.

Thank you very much for posting these pieces about Addison's and Covid-19.

I don't think you need to apologise since I am sure everyone here realises that having adrenal insufficiency is an issue. What your research has revealed is how that makes Covid-19 especially dangerous. So at least you and other Addison's men & women can take extra care.

The piece about testosterone is also interesting. I am not sure if I have ever had mine tested but will ask when next a blood test is due.

So well done in digging these references out.

I have had people say "Oh you have AMN, you are high risk". Not so much, it is definitely Addisons that makes it high risk. In AMN we are strong as we put up with it every day.
