Jevtana and carboplatin combo..where to go after

My dad is now going through combo chemo (jevtana and carboplatin). Has anyone else experienced this and if so was it positive? Dad is having a lot of pain and just weak with it. We expected the weakness but not so much the pain. He was continuing to have an increase in psa on taxotere and then jevtana so oncologist recommended the combo. He has a biopsy next week to see if his cancer mutated to small cell. We are at the end of treatment options as he has tried everything. The doctor mentioned that depending on the results they may be able to get him into a clinical trial however the closest would be 4 hours and farther Houston, Texas. We are in KY. Just to give a bit more details: diagnose stage 4 June 2015; Gleason 10; Mets to liver, pelvic lymph nodes, lungs, chest lymph nodes. He has been on casodex, 2 rounds of taxtotere (one when first diagnosed and again in may this year), zytiga, xtandi, jevtana and now combo chemo. He wasn’t a candidate for Provenge. I guess I’m looking for what to expect next.

Sometimes, there is a temporary PSA and pain flare before the pain gets better. The main thing is pain relief and reducing tumor size - if this combo works, then a maintenance therapy with a PARP inhibitor (in clinical trials) may work too. I know MD Anderson is doing a clinical trial of that.

Thanks for the information!! They are going to do scans after the third combo treatment but as of now his psa continues to rise. They did mention a possible clinical trial at MD Anderson but my dad isn’t sure he wants to travel that far. I’m trying to help as much as can but it just seems like we are running out of options. I hate cancer!

Hello Tiff,

After I came off of Jevtana and Carboplatin earlier this year my MO was going to put me on Keytruda, but decided to let me give Xtandi a try before Keytruda. After Xtandi stops being effective for me, I'm sure I'll be getting Keytruda. I'm in Florida and go to MDA for treatment. The long trips are a pain, but for now they are worth it for us.

Take Care, Monty
