Teacher meeting

We recently had a meeting with one of our son's high school teachers.

This teacher first sent me and our son an agenda for the meeting, then when we started the meeting he asked our son, "What he thought were his strengths in the classroom and then turned and me and asked if I wanted to add anything.

This is the very first time a teacher has ever asked our son this ( our son is a Sophomore). He then went over his 504 Plan in detail.

Next he discussed how best our son could study for his tests in the future AND gave him a few outside resources to use if he needed them.

We made and action plan and the teacher told me that we could talk after the next test he took, if I was still worried. Our son has gone from getting a C in this class to borderline getting an A (fingers crossed going into the final he will have an A).

I think my only next steps are to write a letter of support to the principal and maybe CC: the superintendent of the school district.

How different could education be for our children wirh ADHD, if there were more teachers like this special one in our children's lives..

One last thing.. when I told this teacher that he was the very first teacher in all the years of attending school that has every held a meeting and covered his 504 plan in detail. He said "it is our ( meaning teachers) responsibility by law"... and he apologized to me and he said this made him sad.

Not all teachers are amazing like this one, please support the ones that are amazing and let them know how much we need and appreciate them, it is not easy being a great teacher.

Thanks for listening..

Hi Onthemove, that's fantastic for you and your son. Isn't it a nice and refreshing change to have a teacher that really cares for your child? We had one who was like that, when my boy was in 7th grade. She was amazing, and I let her know how much I appreciated her. And at the end of the school year I sent her a bouquet of flowers with a thank you note.

Thanks for sharing your amazing teacher.. Yes I am still thinking about how to express my thanks to this teacher (besides the letter to the principal/superintendent). Teachers don't need much, but they do need to know we appreciate them and their hard work. I have had our son hand write a note and a gift card to their favoriate local retail place.

I’m so glad to hear this. We need to hear more positive stories like this one. Yes, this teacher deserves some recognition. Your son too! How wonderful to hear his hard work is being seen!❤️

Yes, please support the ones that are amazing, but what do we do about the many who aren't? It is unacceptable to me that it should be the EXCEPTION to have a teacher who cares as this teacher does, and one who abides by the law. This is why we homeschooled, and chose our teachers. I wish everyone could do that.
