is an adhd coach the answer?

Good morning. I have a 15 yo son with adhd with very limited executive functioning who is struggling with going to school, doing school work, etc etc. I've recently been hearing about adhd coaches. Has this worked for anyone?

We live in a small town so there are no coaches nearby and with so many online options can folks make any recommendations for good coaches that do online work. Much thanks.

Hello che63,

Just sending a quick note…

As I often say, you are surrounded by many who can relate to things you & your son may be experiencing. And this forum has a wealth of information & knowledge from its members to its staff.

In case this is helpful (now or in the future), I’m passing this along...

I’m a Certified ADHD Executive Function Coach & I work with students of all ages.

All session's are online (via zoom), 1 hour a week (split into 2-30 minute sessions) & about 90% of my clients come from referrals.

Any questions, feel free to reach out.

No pressure. Just an fyi.

Thank you.

Things like limited executive functioning are not helped by a coach. An hour a week online will not help. I have severe ADHD and it's a neurological issue. Think of it like using a coach to treat seizures it wouldn't work. You can try it, but be prepared when you don't get the results you expect.

Hi Highlysuspect99,

I’m sorry it sounds like your coaching experience wasn't a positive one. And I understand that’s frustrating & disappointing.

However, I’m confident that with the “right coach” (whoever that may be) there’s a lot of opportunity for growth. And with the flexibility of being online is especially helpful for busy schedules. I’ve seen students flourish and implement the tools they’ve learned during their coaching sessions in their everyday life.

Most of my clients are referrals from parents of current or former students.

If you decide you would like to learn more I’m happy to chat. And I can provide references from parents to share their experience with online coaching if that’s helpful. There’s no contract. We do a first session & see how it goes. No one is obligated to continue.

No pressure. Just FYI. :)

Whichever route you go, I hope it’s a positive & helpful experience.

While ADHD coaching can be helpful, I also wanted to mention another option that’s been really beneficial for me: occupational therapy (OT). Occupational therapists are trained to help people with ADHD improve executive functioning skills, like time management, organization, and building routines — all crucial for school success. I’ve personally worked with an OT through a platform called Melo, which connects people with licensed OTs who specialize in ADHD support. They focus on personalized strategies that fit each person’s lifestyle and challenges. Since your son’s school struggles are a big concern, an OT could help create practical systems to make things more manageable. I believe Melo offers free consultations if you’d like to explore that option. I really hope you find the right support for your son — it’s clear how much you care, and that’s such an important step. Wishing you the best! ❤️

thanks for this idea. i checked out the website. looks like they only cover certain states, not one i'm in; not sure if that is purely because of insurance limitations. but i reached to them to see if they'd take private clients outside of the insurance context. i'm waiting to hear back from them.

Wasn't sure what that was but of course Googled it and I see that it is a website for families experiencing ADHD. So thank you for that.

It might seem obvious, but one thing to consider is whether your son is interested in coaching. I found a great coaching organization and my son (13 yo at the time) wouldn’t go. We switched to online without any luck. We tried two different coaches, including a young man with ADHD himself whom I thought he’d really relate to. Perhaps in another few years he’ll be interested….
