Difficulty finding a psychiatrist or counselor..
I read that strattera works in 40 % of patients, and can help with anxiety. It is a non stimulant. Usually the first med tried is a stimulant, like ritalin or adderall. My 12 yo daughter first was on adderal, which didn't help and made her have obsessive thoughts. She then took vyvanse, another stimulant, which seemed to work better, but still a lot of disorganization, outbursts, and obsessive thoughts. Now the psych decreased dose of vyvanse, and started strattera. He said it will take 4-6 weeks before strattera effect is seen. I dont know if I have seen much change yet. She will be in 7 th grade, and i too don't want another year of difficulty turning in homework. I know it is trial and error, but i wish there was a better way.
I would change psychiatrist, but he is the only one who takes insurance and i can't pay out of pocket.
My advice would be to try something else if strattera isn't working.
We've been waiting 3 mos for my 8 yo daughter's appt w new pediatric psychiatrist My daughter's ADHD has always been treated by the pediatrician and after a very difficult year and many medication side effects, I decided to go to psychiatrist. I had hoped to try out a new medication over the summer. No such luck, our appt is 9/20.. It's so frustrating. My only suggestion is book the appointment even if it's a ways out and continue working w currently prescriber until you can see new dr. Hang in there...
I feel your pain. We were on a 6 month waitlist to get him diagnosed with adhd and then another 4 month waitlist to get a psych for meds. Crazy!
I hope you get in sooner and your daughter gets the help he needs.
are you willing to drive a little bit? I know that I called three places in town and none of them were seeing new patients. So I started calling around to the city 1 hr away and got a newer operation.
Hello, my son also has difficulties turning in homework. At the end of last school year, we added new accommodation: he is going to have a red folder for homework’s and teachers will have to check . So, if he won’t turn the homework in, they will either check his folder or remind him to check his folder. Maybe this is an idea ?
We were also struggling to replace our psychiatrist when their old one retired. It took a year to find a new one and we actually went with a psychiatric nurse practitioner. A psychiatric nurse practitioner can still prescribe the medications your child needs and I was able to find one much closer to our home and one that was covered by our insurance than a regular psychiatrist.
