June Walking Challenge: Mixing it up

I’m posting our monthly challenge a tad early, as I am at a family gathering and funeral currently. I’ve had a bit of a tough 4 weeks, also concerning my walking routines, with two minor calf strains occurring on my walks, setting my whole fitness activities back by weeks.

Rowing, I could start quite quickly again, and I had to find a way to walk to work as usual, but running and more active walking had to wait. (My ramblings about calf strains are here healthunlocked.com/strength... )

So last month's May challenge was left aside for a while, and now I am at the point of starting again with my running and walking and need some motivation to get out there for some walks.

One of the most motivating things for me is when I plan on having various kinds of walking adventures, a new experience or changing things up.

So, I thought this month’s challenge could be about mixing things up!

★★★ May Challenge ★★★

Mix up your walks and add variety, and share your walking adventures by taking a picture

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

So, our challenge this month is to find how to add variety to your walking routines.

You could search out some countryside to find a rewarding walk. Or when visiting relatives, a nice social walk in new surroundings.

Towns and cities offer interesting walks, including parks, heritage trails, canal towpaths, riverside paths, commons, woodlands, heaths and nature reserves.

You could try out a treadmill for walking in a gym, or - if you have a treadmill of your own - play around with the programs and try a new one.

If wanting to stay inside, there is also the possibility of trying an indoor walking session, following a YouTube workout.

Here is a bullet list of just some ideas to add some variety to your walks:

- **Change the route:** Explore different neighbourhoods, parks, or nature trails.

- **Vary the pace:** Mix in intervals of brisk walking, slow strolling, or even jogging.

- **Add a theme:** Focus on photography, birdwatching, or identifying plants along the way.

- **Use a walking app:** Try apps that offer guided tours, fitness tracking, or augmented reality experiences.

- **Walk with a friend or group:** Invite someone along for company and conversation.

- **Incorporate exercises:** Stop periodically to do push-ups, squats, or stretches.

- **Try different times of day:** Walk in the early morning, at lunchtime, or in the evening to experience different atmospheres.

- **Listen to something new:** Play an audiobook, podcast, or a new music playlist.

- **Engage in mindfulness:** Focus on your surroundings, breathing, and the sensations in your body to turn the walk into a meditative experience.

- **Aim to get an Active10 badge:** Aim for a specific badge from the A10 app, and celebrate that achievement by posting on our A10 forum

So happy walking, everyone!

Help your fellow walkers stay motivated by posting pics or thoughts from

some of your walking experiences!

Just our usual links to our Active10 App, which one can run even whilst doing this challenge:

★ For those new to walking or those who like to track and be rewarded for their walking, you can combine the above challenges with the use of the NHS Active 10 App. The Active 10 app anonymously records every minute of walking you do. And you can just pop your phone in your pocket and it still tracks every mile. I have it on my phone with constant tracking on, although you will have to open it every few days to keep it tracking. Details at: nhs.uk/better-health/get-ac...

And if you are new to walking, have a look at the following guidance or plans:

★ NHS Guidance on Walking for Health, with plenty of ideas for getting those steps in and link to the Active10 app nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/r...

I'm so sorry there has been a passing in the family CBDB - please accept my heartfelt condolences 🙏

I love your idea of changing things up on walks! Despite the fact that I am lucky to have many beautiful walks literally on my doorstep, they do get a bit same old/same sometimes, although I hate to say it as it makes me sound so ungrateful 🙁

I took Monroe for an outing to our local NT country park, Dinefwr, last weekend and met up with friends for a bit of a communal doggy walk. Apart from the fact that poor Monroe touched a live electric fence (I have never heard her squeal and yell like that before, and I hope I never will again 🫨) it was a fabulous couple of hours in the most beautiful surroundings with fabulous company and I thought to myself on the way home that I must get out and about more.

The weather has been so awful for months on end now, and I admit it has me on a real downer. Couple that with the Long Covid fatigue and the day job, I have been getting very remiss in getting out and about of late and I am desperately trying to motivate myself again - sadly without much success 🙁

I'm off for a follow up appointment with my GP this afternoon and am going to ask him if I can be signed off the day job for a couple of weeks, just to allow myself a bit of breathing space to see if I can get my mojo working again. I'm not depressed in the classical sense, as I do have lots of happy times, but I am feeling really tired, unmotivated, and low and I think a few weeks off to reset my compass may well be helpful. Anyway, we shall see.......................

I have done my sums recently and technically I could retire a year early in August 2024, when I turn 65, but it would mean much less to fall back on monetarily once I officially retire in August 2025, when I turn 66 and that makes me very nervous. However, it is increasingly looking like I may just take the plunge anyway because I just can't face being tied to a job that rips the backbone out of me every week now. Life is s feeling too short........

Anyway, no more moaning from me! Thank you, as always for your inspiration and I will try to live up to my promise to myself to mix and match up more in June - it's only a couple of days away now. Let's do a sun dance, or even a no-rain dance, and hope for better walking weather 🌞😎☀️🚶🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ xxx

Oh dear, I somehow missed your reply and was just rereading yours. Sorry!

How are you now? Have you been able to work out your retirement date? You obviously managed to fit in some awesome walks, and planting whole forests! So looking back to when you wrote this reply 4 weeks ago, are you feeling stronger and fitter?

No worries - these threads get really busy 🙏Thing is I'm not really much better, although I would say that after a month off work I am starting to feel a little more human. However, the GP has just signed me off for another month as he doesn't want me to take a step backwards by going back to work when it's clearly work that is exhausting me more than the other aspect of my life.

More thinking for me I'm afraid and the more I find out the less I know it's seems. My option to draw down my pension early is not as clear as I thought it might be, and if I take the lot as a lump sum I will be paying 40% tax on 75% of it, so it makes no sense to do it 🙄
