2024: Is it time for another set of walking challenges???

Well, how has your start into 2024 been? Have you walked well into the new year, yet? Have you caught up with the old?

As the last photo challenge fizzles out (last stragglers can still catch up with it at healthunlocked.com/active10... ) which was the theme “white”. Quite fitting actually as I woke up yesterday to a white wonderland, but annoyingly work was so heavy that I didn’t manage to get out at all for the whole day! But maybe some of you UK walkers enjoyed the white walking winterland?

So last year, we had an amazing year on A10, collectively walking through different themes and challenges. We took pictures of numbers, of things big and green, of critters and our shoes. As a sort of book club of the walking world, we challenged ourselves to walk more consciously and try different things, from walking backwards, following a river, and listening to our walking, to combining with foraging or walking while singing. The challenges are all still available from healthunlocked.com/active10...

So, what shall we challenge ourselves with in this shiny new year in 2024?

Here are my thoughts, but I would love to hear your ideas or suggestions. And offers of guest hosting our monthly challenges are always welcome, it brings so much motivation to all of us when we hear different voices exploring all sorts of aspects around walking.

- + - 2024 A10 Themed Challenges - + -

I would suggest we have one challenge at the start of the month. (The two different challenges were, at times, confusing for me, so not sure how others felt?).

But to keep the opportunity of both having an active theme and the opportunity to snap some pics on walks, we will merge the photo and themed challenge into one!

Themes can come from any sources, books, magazines, or something that someone has come across in their readings about walking. My themes will probably focus on a chapter or even just an idea found in a paragraph within a walking book. I’ve got quite a few on my night table that have helped me keep my walking motivation and I will continue to draw on them for ideas for themes.

But guest posters can also draw ideas for themes from anywhere, as long as they can be linked to an active walking quest, something to try out on a walk, to test or engage in. And then a call to take some pics on those walks with a related theme.

The challenges will be posted around the first week of every month.

So we’ll start in the first week of February!

I hope that sounds all good, but I would love to hear your ideas, so here are some questions to ponder about on your next walk and report back here by reply:

★ 1) Does putting the photo challenge and the themed challenge together in a monthly quest post sound good to you?

★ 2) Should we call it a “quest”, a “challenge” or something else? Will it matter what we call it?

★ 3) Is the beginning of the month the right time to post these, providing some additional motivation to get out there through that month?

★ 4) Would you like to host one of these? And if yes, let us know by reply to this email, and we can keep a list of walkers who are up for hosting a monthly challenge or quest.

★ 5) What are the kind of readings about walking you do, or are interested in? On my nightstand are at the moment both books to read anew, re-read and discover from scratch, including: Ramble on, by Sinclair McKay; In Praise of Walking, by Shane O’Mara; and of course, 52 Ways of Walking, by Annabel Streets, which I still dip into here and there. There are also always some walking guides to various regions, towns or cities, some from the library, some from my own. Currently: Peak, Scotland, Glasgow, Edinburgh. And some old walking magazines, as well. So, what is on your reading list? Are there any materials we can draw some motivational and inspirational ideas from? Let us know!

Anyway, enough rambling, let’s get rambling. 👣👣👣🥾

Happy walking!

hi! I think many posters already know the monthly Quest post over on Bridge to 10k so it would best to call if something other than that to avoid confusion! Plus. “challenge” keeps the link with the posts that have gone up before.

I enjoy the photo challenges and am looking forward to the next one. The challenges don’t influence what kind of walk I do but they do provide some nice entertainment on the way round!

That's great feedback. Thank you. All makes sense and I think you're right. We want to avoid confusion.

'Challenge' at start of the month with photo and theme linked sounds good. I am trying to get my husband to join Active 10, so maybe this will help. I am terrible at keeping up a Challenge, but every little bit of motivation helps! No reading suggestions, I am afraid from me.

That's brilliant feedback. And yes, every little bit helps to get out there and active! Thank you!

🍏I enjoy the photo challenges whatever they are called but one theme a month is enough for some of us who are involved in other disciplines like running etc and I expect for newbies to the App

🍏 A Scented walk … today I deliberately brushed against a pine just for the scent. I adore going passed rosemary and having a wee bit in my pocket.. the ozone scent of the sea etc etc..

🍏Mindful Walking

These are such nice themes! Thank you and noted! (Not sure ozone smells nice, though? Does it? )

Oh I love it it’s that strong smell of sea that sometimes isn’t there! However there’s a thought in there too as we do pass bins & things on walks.. horse manure, smoke ….

Well, in 2023 I managed 1,190 miles, and I would really like to break that record this year.

I have got off to a very slow start sadly, what with inclement weather (aka chucking it down solidly for 2 weeks!) and feeling the effects of PVF fatigue again, but I seem to be coming out the other side now and am keen to stay motivated and moving along.

My plan is to get as close as I can to 8,000 steps a day minimum, using my treadmill for days like today when I am bound to end up in deficit as I'm stuck behind a desk from 8:30am to 6:00pm with only 30 minutes for lunch and afterwards too exhausted to do much 😏It's still dark at 6pm to boot, which doesn't help either!

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is still proving a challenge, but one positive is that since starting on an add-in duiretic I have lost 4.5lbs - all water, I know, but still 4.5lbs which I am going to celebrate 😊

Thank you all so much for your support, encouragement, and kind words - it means more than you know 😍xx

Wow! 4.5lbs is 4.5lbs, no matter if it is water. It would be worse if it’s muscle! I’m sure you gained walking muscle with your 1190 miles! Fabulously well done!

how do I join a challenge? Thanks

CBDB profile image
CBDBAdministrator in reply toWalkingtodestress

We haven’t begun yet with the new challenges, but this one is still live: healthunlocked.com/active10...

You head to the challenge, walk and take a pic of something white and either add the pic by reply to the challenge or post here. The instructions will be in the post that describes the challenge.

So no fancy joining process, just getting out there and meeting the challenge and then posting on here.

Enjoy! The next new challenge will drop in the first week of Feb!

I am for Challenge being kept as the name and linking the photo challenge in with it :)

Yup, sounds like the way forward, doesn’t it! Thank you!

I agree with others - linking the two and ‘Challenge’ = less confusion. Start of the month seems good to me. Thanks 😊
