All ready for a new set of inspiring resolutions. Picture are the books and maps on my bedside table, so looking forward to night time reading into walking, running, rowing and exploring all sorts of potential routes for 2023!
Exciting!
So what’s on your bedside table? Any walking related readings?

Hi CBDB I have similar maps of my local area: Ordnance Survey Explorer for Arundel & Pulborough, Landranger for Chichester & the South Downs and a guide to circular walks in the South Downs National Park. I also acquired OS Explorer maps for places where I went on holiday over the last couple of years: The Peak District and Oban & North Lorn. It was great to plot out walks and get used to the terrain before I went!
Added to those, I've got two books by Vassos Alexander: 'Don't stop me now' and 'Running up that hill' to read, together with a 2023 Running Log Book which I got for Christmas which I'll complete during the year to chart my exploits.
I’ve read both of those Vassos Alexander books. I had them from the library and liked them so much I’ve bought them. I’ve got the Marathon running one from him on the go at the moment. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them too!
I absolutely love an OS map. Occasionally I walk with a trail guide book but I much prefer and unwieldy OS map. MrU is a proper walker who does entire national trails with his friend so we’ve got quite a collection here. We’ve also got a UK adventure map on the wall in the study where we mark significant routes we’ve done on. My dream house would have map wallpaper in a library room!
I’m currently reading How to run a marathon by Vassos Alexander at the moment. I’m still in the part with all the personal stories which I’m really enjoying. It’s easy to read with self contained chapters so perfect for bedtime! There’s a technical section about training which I think will have to be a daytime proper concentration required read with coffee! I’ve got “Your Pace or Mine?” from the library as my next book. I like to have one or two (or five!!!) in the queue.
That sounds awesome! Yeah, I am another fellow map lover! Also love studying them ad nauseam. We do not have map wallpaper, but we do have a large picnic blanket that is a map! 🤣🤣
Big discovery for me was the footpath app, which when extending to 10k runs, I took out a subscription as it gave me access to OS maps at a cheaper price than the OS app. It’s been brilliant!
Ha ha.. some of my maps and books there ! Nope... though, my bedside reading... old familiar friends, who send me to sleep without any need for thought. Now in the study!!!! Now you are talking.
yeah, I love the Jarrold Walks. They have OS maps, they have shorter walks (necessary for me) and there has never been a walk we tried from the books that has not been utterly delightful. They really know what they are doing when they select the walks!
We tried containing our books in the livingroom, but they escaped and are wildly roaming around the whole house 🤣📚🤣📖🤣
🤣🤣 that’s hilarious! But i can understand that so well. We have moved quite a lot, and we used to have a house in Scotland with a very large living room. That was able to contain all the bookshelves.
Having moved down to England, the books-to-wallshelves ratio has worsened, and so don’t fit all in one room.
No such inspiring books - or that kind of inspiring books - at my bedside. But I did buy the writings of Julian of Norwich, the 14th century mystic who envisioned God as the universal mother! I'm waiting to read more! My resolutions are in my head: to exercise at least 10 minutes a day even on the days I am not in a mood or unable to do much. To do pranayama (deep breathing) and some chair-based surya namaskars (this is the sun salutation in Yoga) which really exercises most of the body even though you do it sitting in a chair!
That sounds great. I went once on a pranayama weekend and it felt like it significantly improved my asthma.
Just in case this is of interest, we do have a Strength & Flexibility forum here on HealthUnlocked, that might provide additional ideas for workouts. The forum is at healthunlocked.com/strength... and we have a folder for targeted workouts, including ideas for seated workouts. Link healthunlocked.com/strength... . We also tend to share our experiences as we go through various yoga, Pilates or other challenges. Feel invited to have a look around.
Julian of Norwich, I had to look that up on Wikipedia ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jul... ). She definitely sounds intriguing, with her works being “are the earliest surviving English language works by a woman”.
I am still looking for additional reading material as it's unusual for me to only have one book under my bed... Currently there's “Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto,” by Tricia Hersey. It's super fascinating and an (almost) daily reminder to myself to allow myself to slow down... (See thenapministry.com/ )
