I hope everyone is still in full celebratory mode and deep in mince pies and Christmas leftovers.
I just wanted to drop a quick note for those regular walkers who might find this challenge just the thing to increase or meet their walking-related resolutions for next year.
The #Walk1000Miles challenge was brought to my attention last year by one of our forum members. It is a campaign created by Country Walking, the UK's outdoor magazine.
It’s a bit too much for me, both in terms of walking fitness and the time available. I wouldn’t know when to squeeze in the 2.74 miles a day or how I might manage to keep up that daily distance daily. But as my husband corrected me, if I had a 30min walk to and from work, that would already count pretty much towards the needed daily target. Add a couple of longer walks at the weekend, and boots are your shoes! (So to speak)
Nevertheless, I’m out for this year. But if anyone is interested, the challenge has great support on a dedicated Facebook group, and we could also see if there are a few #1000mile walkers here on these forums. There are also some medals on offer for a good price, and one can also buy a calendar and mile tracker, and the Facebook group has free spreadsheets, all dedicated to keeping one on course.
UPDATE 31/12/2022: Changed my mind, and I’m also in for this year and all signed up. Joining quite a few of us here! Wowsa!!
( I’ve decided to do an amended version of this challenge, using not just walking but also rowing and running to count towards the 1000 mileage! Still a stretch target for me, but now achievable. So that might be also an option for others if 1000 miles is too daunting)

thanks for this - I love this idea but like you I don't believe I have the time / stamina to manage the 1000 miles in a year. My walk to work is 1.7 miles, and my weekend walks are accompanied by my dog who is nowadays a little old lady who can't go too far!
Most days, after a long day on my feet at work I just can't face walking home (it is uphill all the way on the homeward leg ) though admittedly that would increase my mileage. This year I was averaging about 40 miles a month so a target of 1000 km next year would still be a challenge for me I think.
Yes, my Runkeeper tracker that I use to track walking and running, tells me this year I reached a measly 270km (3 injury couch stints and 1 Covid) Last year was much better where I reached 715km, so nowhere near. Something to aspire to for the future. (And shockingly the challenge is 1000 miles! 😳😱😳😱😳😱😂)
yes, it is a lot. But I think I have now committed to be trying to see if I can reach 1000 miles if I put all my workouts together: rowing, walking, running and yoga sessions (there is a conversion table that provides the equivalent mileage). It’s not quite the original challenge as designed but it will fit my needs.
It sounds like you have already quite a healthy walking pattern set up, which sounds great!
Ok, I fear I have also done the deed. After some encouraging information from Realfoodieclub (using the MyVirtualMission App allows you to count all exercises towards your total) I have signed up for a medal (that extra bit of nudging motivation).
And seeing all those amazing walkers on here, I thought I’d find a realistic way to join you.
So for me it’s not going to be only walking, so a kind of gentler #WalkRowRunYoga-the-equivalent-of-1000-Miles challenge, and from what I can see on my Runkeeper, this is still a mighty stretch target for me. (The best year in 2021 I racked up only 450 miles on Runkeeper).
So I will have to
- increase distances in all my workouts (running, rowing, and walking)
- and start logging yoga as equivalent mileage.
- increase walking mileage , also using our own monthly HU Active10 challenges
I think I might just be able to do it, and if not, I will have increased my walking and workouts!
All good in our books, right?
So hope our awesome walkers Oldfloss sunny369 LottieMW @missUnderstanding Hidden ChannelRunner2 Realfoodieclub Doris8 @richGMcC (my hubby) will allow me to join in on the walking fun, even if I use my rowing and running to add to my increasing walking mileage!
I also add my running miles (or rather kilometers...). It's way too complicated to keep those apart with the iHealth app only and I don't want to use yet another app... 🤣
Woohoo!!! (Yes, I wish all distance trackers would realise that we runners need to have both displayed simultaneously, rather than to have to switch tediously in settings)
Or - speaking as a German living in the UK - we could just all decide on only using the simpler to use metrics system 😊😏😉
Having just said this, I actually appreciate the ability of incremental goals, switching between metrics and imperial… e.g. 5km, 5miles, 10km, 10miles, 21km etc 🤣🤣👍🏽🏃🏽♀️
What helped is that you can do this in a Conqueror-like-App, called MyVirtualMission. They have a signup there as well, and the app makes it doubly enticing for me ( myvirtualmission.com/missio... )
Also my hubby will join in on the fun (trying to tag @richgmcc here) but I can see he hasn’t even found this forum yet! 👆😠👉👇👆🤣🤣
I am doing this too... I love walking... And its already what I do in the morning... Thank you for making me aware of the site... Really appreciate the heads up...
(I’m still learning to love walking. I still get backpain from walking but not from running. Nordic Walking is a bit better, but more of a whole body workout. But I really want to be able to walk without back-pain. That’s my goal! Should be possible, right?)
I think this is may be one step (ha!) too much for me.
One of my goals this year is to be kind to myself…1,000 miles is too much to even consider! Just checked my Strava stats…covered 1175k (so 730 miles) in 2021, when I was super active, last year it was only 611k (380 miles)…both walking and running…
thank you! Yeah, I’ll be needing those cheers, as my stats looked kind of similar to yours. So I’m adding everything I can: walking, running, rowing, yoga … doing the housework maybe? … 🤣🤣🤣
I reckon there is a good chance I might not make it, but if it increases my mileage, it will be worth it for me, I think 🤔.
