Has anyone got walks planned over the break?

Getting out can be difficult this time of year, parties, change of routine and general “dont feel up to it”. All can be helped with a little stroll out the door sometimes.

Happy Walking Active 10ers. 😀

We are having an ultra quite Christmas this year. Last year was so busy with everyone wanting to come and share our first Christmas after transplant we decided this year just a little quiet one. So looking at the weather we might get some good walks in.

Hehe hopefully I can get to the other side of Christmas without having to take three months to lose the weight I have put on.

I love all the treats 😂😂😂😂.

Happy Walking all. Rfc x

Hi Rfc! Got back home last night after all my travels! The weather's not bad, so I'm off to the next village within the hour - it will be my first decent walk for 10 days. I'm going to be puffing and blowing again, but, strangely, I'm really looking forward to it! I'm going to be alone this Christmas, so hopefully, if the weather's kind, I'll be able to walk off all the naughtiness I've got planned to put in my mouth!

That sounds like a plan. You have done the same as us, lots of visiting and catching up beforehand then a really quiet one. The weather looks good. I must admit I am not one that looks for a white Christmas, I’d rather go out for a good walk Instead. 😀. Enjoy your naughtiness 😉.

Hate the cold weather, and really lack the motivation to go out walking when it’s so cold. I think I must be sensitive to it as I would be quite happy curling up and hibernating for the winter. Although I love to see snow and frost outside, it always makes me happy.

I can’t do ice, it terrifies me. I have so many accidents. ☹️. It is hard to get out there when the weather is bad, isn’t it.

Good gear can be a game changer for cold weather. I've been slowly buying my OH better outdoor gear because he'd rather hibernate, but he needs to get out the door for his seasonal mood troubles. Good luck over the holidays.

Lesley1234567 in reply to runswithdogs

Does getting out help his seasonal mood?

in reply to Lesley1234567

Oh Lesley1234567 I can so identify with that! I'm afraid I have to bribe myself in order to get out the door when it's cold - and if it's raining? well, enough said! My latest trick is to not have coffee in the house, so I just have to go to the coffee shop! Doesn't always work cos I'm a tea drinker too! Happy Christmas with high hopes we'll both get out a couple of times!

It would be nice if we had a coffee shop or a shop would be good too, but it’s a 16 mile round trip. One day maybe lol.

in reply to Lesley1234567

Lesley1234567!!!!!! You're so brave! I've recently moved to a village and we have a basic shop, but I have to walk to the next village for a coffee/doctor/chippy/general store. It's only about a mile and a half and I need motivation to go there - well done you for getting out at all!

Lesley1234567 profile image
Lesley1234567 in reply to

It looks nice outside right now it was shocking this morning. So I’m going to brave the short walk which is just under two miles. It would be nice if there was a shop of any description because then I may see another person. I will not even see a car or maybe one, as it’s Saturday lol.

in reply to Lesley1234567

You are obviously really motivated to get fitter - and you will succeed!

I think I am responsible for what happens to me that is my health. I don’t want to go through old age infirm with lots of ailments. It’s just how I feel as I have become older I want to keep my independence I suppose.

in reply to Lesley1234567

I'm in that club too! I had to move 5 months ago because I can't manage stairs anymore - I live in a bungalow now. It was really hard to admit that after almost 30 years of dealing with a degenerating spine I had to accept the inevitable! Still walking though! Not far and not fast, but still on my feet!:)

Lesley1234567 in reply to

You will be so much happier in a bungalow and will be able to do more, which all adds to keeping your independence. That’s brilliant, enjoy your new home.

in reply to Lesley1234567

Thanks so much Lesley1234567 - you've lifted my spirits no end. Have a wonderful Christmas and let's both look forward to a healthy and fit 2019! x

I am in the same boat as you kay50. I moved to a flat 3 yrs ago but I do my best to get out most days. 😊

in reply to Caroline62

I so identify with you, Caroline62 - the older I get the more I tend to go with the flow. I go out when I can and try not to beat myself up when I don't make it!

🤣 bribing oneself... good strategy!

Caroline62 profile image
Caroline62 in reply to

That’s a good idea Kay50 but as I have around 6 a day it would be to expensive for. I usually buy single piece of fruit and that gets me out. Otherwise I would stay in doors for days . 😊

in reply to Caroline62

That's a brilliant idea too Caroline62 - a lovely plump, juicy, colourful and sweet piece of fruit would get me out of the door too! It's really hard to get out sometimes, isn't it? I have been known not to show my face for a couple of weeks at a time! I need a routine and a huge amount of self-discipline to walk regularly - I don't always succeed.

Going to try and get out every day still, but it'll be tough. Temperature is dropping and the days are getting more full. Trying to squeeze walks in between the various events is going to be tough, and it's just not so pleasant to go out when it's dark. I'll have to take advantage of whatever chances I get.

in reply to runswithdogs

Hey runswithdogs, dashing about doing stuff is being active too! I don't think I'd ever go out if I had to deal with the extreme weather that you have to, so you are a true warrior to get out as much as you do! Have a fun festive season x

She is in Canada, the stories we get to hear about the weather there. I feel so lucky living here in the UK. ❄️❄️❄️.

runswithdogs in reply to PippiRuns

I'm in Western Canada. -8 C the past few days, but it's been a nicer winter than we've had in a long time. We could be 20 degrees colder than that this time of year easily. But now I'm spoiled!

Walked to the library and back today. My Garmin says I walked 7.19k 💪

Will be spending Christmas with my parents in law. The live near the beach and 🌳 forest, and they both like to go for long walks. I’m sure I’ll get to walk quite a bit.

Enjoy your quiet Christmas Rfc🎄

A beach AND a forest nearby!?!?! Oh wow - how wonderful. I'm sure you're going to have some really "feel good" walks. Enjoy!

I was disabled, but when my heart started working again, I worked up to walking 50km a week... that was OTT, and I am now walking 3 to 5 km/day... but I try to avoid walking in the rain. If rain is forecast, I try to walk more the previous day, so I walked 6km yesterday.

I have the HRV4Training app on my iPhone/AppleWatch, and it quantifies fatigue, fitness etc., and it seems to help.

Realfoodieclub profile image
Realfoodieclub in reply to S11m

3-5km is a nice distance for a day. It will keep you fit and boost your immune system. I looked into the HRV4T. It intrigues me and when I change my garmin I might go for something that uses the same system. Hope the rain stay away over the break and you can get out when you want. Rfc x.

in reply to S11m

Hi S11m - haven't heard from you for a while! So glad to hear that your health issues are still under control and you've got your walking routine sorted! 3 - 5 km a day is a good distance too! I'm quite envious when I hear about folk who use interesting apps, as I'm a total technophobe and don't use apps at all! Looking back, I could never use a video recorder successfully, so it's no surprise that I'm in awe of my mobile phone! Lol! Hope you have a happy Christmas, S11m and a healthy 2019!

Good planning to look at the weather and put in the extra effort on the nice days. I try and do the same. If the weather is good, make it a little longer.

6km today, and 29km last week.

Foggy tomorrow... but I could take the 5km diversion to lunch!

Yes I have some walks planned and I did an 11.5 mile one on Sunday and a 3 mile one today.
