My mobility is poor due to pain. l cannot exercise or even walk more than a few places without making the pain worse. Any suggestions? I am 77.

Hi there usedtobefit! It's really hard to get/stay fit when you have mobility issues, isn't it? I also struggle with pain - mainly spinal, due to longstanding problems, and more recently (the last 10 years or so) arthritis seems to have attacked all of my joints! But like you, I eventually decided that I had to at least try to get fitter and healthier. I found this forum in June last year - and at that time I could only manage to walk 200 steps and half the time I had to go upstairs on my bottom! Over the last 8 months I have built up my step count to 3000 (granted, with the help of my trusty sholley - a cross between a shopping trolley and a walking aid). I have to say that it hasn't been easy, but with the support and encouragement of the lovely members here I am absolutely chuffed with what I have achieved! The mantra here is slow and steady. Have realistic goals - if an extra 20 steps a week is a do-able challenge for YOU,that's ok! Everyone here will accompany you on your journey! Post regularly and you'll get lots of support!

As Hidden says, slow and steady with realistic goals. For myself, sometimes it's easier to add more frequent little walk breaks in, rather than one big one. I also get more steps in little ways like walking to the kitchen to grab a cup of water. Or if I've been sitting awhile I do a few stretches and maybe walk up and down the hallway. Gentle is the way to go.
