Starting a walking program can be daunting but it surprising how those little steps can add up. As with any exercise program it's best to start of small and build up.
I like to walk places rather than take the bus, I find those little walks really increase my count throughout the day. I use them as little challenges to keep me moving.
Anybody got any more suggestions on how the add in more steps for the day.

Instead of trying to squeeze into the smallest of gaps to get close to the door in car parks, there are usually loads of spaces at the back of the car park that you can drive into easy, your car is less likely to get damaged and you gain steps by walking that little bit further to the shop door. Very often I am parked and in the door while the car which went in front of me is still trying to manoeuvre into the cramped spaces near the door.
Hehe this one make me laugh, my hubby has been doing that for years as he get worried someone will scape his car by flinging their doors open. Great idea and it really does make a difference those little walks.
That's a really good idea Qscout - when I first felt I was well enough to try a little something I read about Random Acts of Fitness and started parking further away. I was quite wobbly and striding out with a shopping trolley was great. It's much less stressful too and makes you much more aware of the weather (which is a good thing)
I love the idea of Random Acts of Fitness! And totally agree with you about the weather.
If you have a shopping list, don't write it in order of the shop layout, put the things on the list jumbled up so you have to go back and forth in the shop to get stuff.
If you are at home, every time you go into a room go to the furthest part of the room and touch the wall.
Go out for a 20 minute walk 3 times a week. Just out of the door and round the block if necessary. Everyone can find 20 minutes (I hope!) and it's a good way of clearing your head.
If you are on higher floors and cant walk up, at least walk down, it is easier than you think and walking down the stairs is often quicker than waiting for the lift.
Though in modern buildings finding the stairs can often be an issue.
Get a dog ! or borrow one - in fact there is a scheme where you can be paired up with a suitable dog that needs walking (elderly owner or owner works long hours/shifts). I will try and find a link. Dogs need walks, not necessarily big hikes but round the block or in a local park - great incentive!
Just be conscious of walking More. Make it a mission 🙂 I thought certain shops were a car drive away. They aren't 😀 I now wouldn't dream of driving there or taking the bus. The more you walk the stronger and fitter you get. Good calorie burn from walking too!
I volunteered to audit some footpaths for the council, which was good fun. Me and the dog, packed lunch and we were off 🙂
Check out your local area on foot. Find out the footpaths, lanes, snickets and short cuts. It's fun and free 😊
Oh Yeah! I borrow a dog! We are a right good team. Sometimes we get my neice's pug to join our posse but he's a bit of a couch potato but we haul his lazy ass out for a walk and then return him home so me and the big dog head out for a proper walk. We head out again with the pug to the local park later
I learned to run with C25k so I could keep up with the hound dawg 😊 I feel much fitter since walking more, dog walking regularly, and have lost loads of weight.
Hi, Continuing the shopping theme, when I go to a large supermarket I "park" the trolley around the store and walk around the aisles collecting the various needed items instead of wheeling the trolley through all the aisles. Usually get halfway round and have to go back for a forgotten item, so a fair few extra steps there! Am also a keen devotee of parking at the outer reaches of the car park.
