Stiffness in ankles after 50s

If you are over 50, can you please take a moment to look at the symptoms below and share your input? I am trying to gather information for a member on HExSOS health platform who has posted a question.

"I've noticed that I'm getting stiffer in my ankles when I get up in the morning or have been on the sofa for a while. I get up and then hobble for a little before my ankles start working properly again. This morning I got caught out by an early delivery driver and had to rush downstairs whilst hobbling. It's annoying and awkward!! I wanted to know whether this was linked to age (50) or maybe peri-menopause and whether I needed to do anything about it."

Your suggestion could make a real difference to her well-being.

I'd say it's pretty common as you age. I certainly walk like a Penguin first thing and then after warm up it goes away. I won't be winning the 100m Olympic gold anytime soon mind you!

Hi gentle stretching upon waking circle those ankles to ease stiffness before walking. Check vitamin levels vit D vit B12 Folate. It is all due to m menopause. and aging I thunk. Stretching will really help .

Hi! I suffer with this as well and I'm only 48!! I've had my symptoms for about the past 5 years on and off!! I had physio advice during covid which the excersises did help initially!! I did the excersises for a few months and was advised to stop them as my symptoms went. However after a few months my symptoms returned and my ankles have been hurting me ever since!! 🤦🫤 I saw another physio last year and she ref me to another physio. He tweaked a couple of the excersises which eventually did start to help!! Then he left so now I've got a different physio!! He's made put some changes in again which sort of help. Some days my ankles are fairly manageable then other days they are worse!! I've noticed that if I do alot of walking that makes my ankles worse. Both physio's have diagnosed Achilles tendonitis which is a condition where the Achilles gets inflamed. This can be caused by over use of the tendon by running or walking which maybe due to over walking over the years? The physio's have said that this condition can take a long time to get better!! Wearing a good supportive shoe or trainer will help as the Achilles likes support. Personally I don't think my symptoms will ever go now and I think it's something I've just got to put up with!!? 🫤🤷 Making me wonder if it could be to do with peri menopause or menopause now a few of you have mentioned it!!
