Hi, this is my first post here and I hope I spelled my ailment correctly. I have it I my left heal while at the same time I have severe arthritis in my right knee. The location of the 2 conditions

In itself presents a problem. Having something on each leg makes walking a challenge to say the least. The Dr. just gave me a boot to sleep in and it hurts so much I can only wear it for a several hours. If anyone out there knows any remedies please let me know. Thanks.

I have one leg causing problems, and that’s bad enough...You might find something here that’s useful 🙂


Stretching and strengthening exercises or using special devices may relieve symptoms. They include:

Physical therapy. A physical therapist can show you a series of exercises to stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon and to strengthen lower leg muscles. A therapist might also teach you to apply athletic taping to support the bottom of your foot.

Night splints. Your physical therapist or doctor might recommend that you wear a splint that stretches your calf and the arch of your foot while you sleep. This holds the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon in a lengthened position overnight to promote stretching.

Orthotics. Your doctor might prescribe off-the-shelf or custom-fitted arch supports (orthotics) to help distribute pressure to your feet more evenly.

Surgical or other procedures

If more-conservative measures aren't working after several months, your doctor might recommend:

Injections. Injecting steroid medication into the tender area can provide temporary pain relief. Multiple shots aren't recommended because they can weaken your plantar fascia and possibly cause it to rupture. Using ultrasound imaging, platelet-rich plasma obtained from the patient's own blood can be injected to promote tissue healing.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy. In this procedure, sound waves are directed at the area of heel pain to stimulate healing. It's usually used for chronic plantar fasciitis that hasn't responded to more-conservative treatments. Some studies show promising results, but it hasn't been shown to be consistently effective.

Ultrasonic tissue repair. This minimally invasive technology was developed in part by Mayo Clinic doctors. It uses ultrasound imaging to guide a needlelike probe into the damaged plantar fascia tissue. Using ultrasound energy, the probe tip vibrates rapidly to break up the damaged tissue, which is then suctioned out.

Surgery. Few people need surgery to detach the plantar fascia from the heel bone. It is generally an option only when the pain is severe and other treatments have failed. It can be done as an open procedure or through a small incision with local anaesthesia.

Hi Dancer, I am waiting for a knee replacement on my left knee and have planter f on my right heel. Very painful. What helps is rolling my foot on a rolling pin 2 or 3 times a day. Over time my pain has gone. I am unable to take anti inflamatries due to Af.

If you don’t have a rolling pin a tennis ball is also great for this, or if your finding it’s quite swollen a cold can of drink, just be careful not too apply to much pressure. Anything that stretches the muscles in the back of leg should also help. My most helpful one is standing on a low level step, with your toe on the step and slowly lower your heels downwards, you’ll want to be holding on to something while you do it, but this is a stretch that really helps to loosen mine. But definitely have a look on YouTube because there are so may many videos around that will have other great tips in. And anything yoga or Pilates should be useful too. If it’s a recurring issue it’s worth seeking help as you may benefit from orthotic insoles in your shoes, they could help your knee also but best to check with someone who knows.

It's quite common for people with an underactive thyroid to have plantar fasciitis. have you have thyroid tests, or do you take thyroid medication?Go to the Thyroid UK group forum on here for best advice.

I had it so bad i could hardly walk, i asked for an ultrasound guided injection which gave instant relief. Life saver in my eyes ! Had 3 now and last one has lasted over 2 years, well pleased.

Hi DancerI suffered with PF for over a year, the pain got so bad a was having to tiptoe everywhere!! i had an extreme about of inflammation so I had the steroid injection which was very painful, but it worked wonders, exercises & PT didn’t work.

Although it aches some days If I’ve been on my feet too much at least I can walk again 😥 I’m also going for SW therapy next week
