Myomectomy for large fibroid

I'm 25 (no children) and have a melon-sized fibroid (10cmx8cm) behind my uterus. I have been referred for surgery and would love to connect with other women who have been through a similar journey. As you can see, I get extremely bloated and uncomfortable after eating but other than that I don't get any symptoms really. I put it down to weight gain and a possible food intolerance at first. I only discovered I had a fibroid following an investigation as to why my periods haven't returned after stopping the contraceptive injection over 2 years ago! I had an ultrasound followed by an MRI and now face an operation. No idea when this will happen due to covid but it has been put through as an 'urgent' (no emergency) procedure. I now face the decision of either key-hole surgery, where they use a tool to cut the fibroid before removal, or a large abdominal incision, like a c-section. Anyone else in a similar position?

Hey there, yes! I'm in a very similar situation. I'm 29 years old (no children), started feeling a lump about a year ago. Because of Covid, it took a little while to be seen in person (to get an ultrasound) by which point the lump was pretty big (18cm x 14cm x 13cm). At the time there was a worry it may have been cancerous but fortunately after several blood tests and an MRI, that risk has been cleared. I'm also on a waiting list for surgery. I've been told that because of the size it'll be like having a c-section for a fibroid.

However, because of covid, I was told this week no surgeries will be scheduled until the pandemic is over, which is disappointing. Fortunately I'm not in pain but my stomach does stick out as well and is pretty solid because of the fibroid.

Hello! Thankyou so much for replying, it's nice to connect with someone of a similar age - most women on here with fibroids seem to be 45+. It sounds like we have been on a similar journey, except yours is a lot bigger than mine, sorry to hear that! I am currently waiting to be contacted about surgery, I was told it could happen in the next few months. I've never had any kind of surgery before so pretty nervous and hoping it won't take me out of action for too long... Keep in touch - feel free to message me anytime. x

If it helps, there are a few blog posts out there where the writer has gone through similar. I read a few and they were re-assuring in what to expect. Just google Myomectomy Blog Post. Same goes to you, feel free to message anytime! x

Hi both! Same position here noticed it last May and have been having prostap injections from aug 2020 - jan 2021 only allowed 6 injections in total to shrink it. But the same as you my surgery was meant to be Dec 3rd 2020 but got cancelled due to Covid no idea when it will be rescheduled. Good news is the prostap injections shrunk the fibroid (was 15cm) but now since not having the injections it’s definitely growing back. I am on Instagram @ginaannelissa if you want to chat. Nice to hear people of a similar age having the same issue (I’m 26 on 20th March 2021) x

Hi Ayla,

I had a 9cm fibroid removed 3 years ago when I was 27 and I had very similar symptoms to you. I had key hole surgery and the scars are barely visible now but the main thing is that you are having it removed so whether you have key hole surgery or a larger incision, it will be so beneficial. It was such a relief to have it removed but it is important to give yourself time to recover after.
