Don’t know what’s wrong with me

I honestly don’t know if I have problems with my tonsils or problems with my thyroid!

I’m a 17 yr old girl from Australia who has absolutely no idea about what’s going on with my health

I feel like doctors aren’t listening to me and they aren’t doing enough tests

Since the end of February something has been wrong with the neck/throat area!

My doctors keep telling me I have tonsillitis but I just feel like that’s not what it is?

If anyone’s had tonsillitis or thyroid problems (since I suspect it could be that too) can you plz tell me if you felt a similar way!

My only 2 symptoms of tonsillitis is pus on tonsils and swollen lymph nodes (I don’t even know if it is my nodes that are swollen since my neck has swollen up a lot but my doctors are saying my lymph nodes don’t feel swollen at all so I have no idea what the swelling is from)

My doctors have said my tonsils don’t look swollen they just have pus on them and that’s it? and I’ve told them my throat doesn’t hurt at all (there’s literally no pain in my throat) but they are still telling me it’s tonsillitis???

With the swelling in my neck it keeps going up and down. Like when it is swollen, under the skin, on either sides of the neck feel really hard and swollen. And the front of my neck leading from under my chin and jaw to the bottom of the front of my neck feels very hard and swollen as well. The only way I can describe it is like a hard line of swelling just in the middle of my neck. Then also at the bottom of my neck there’s a very hard swollen ball like thing that just showed up when all this started so I don’t know if that’s a lymph node or my thyroid??

The worst part of this whole thing is in my neck area since the swelling feels so uncomfortable and sometimes I feel like it’s affecting my breathing.

Each time it flares up I’ve noticed I get really depressed (like more then I usually am) and I can feel my heart rate throughout my whole body and I feel like it’s beating fast. I also have a lot of trouble falling asleep when I have a flare up too!

I’ve been tested for mono (that came back negative)

I’ve been tested for helicobacter since they thought it could be something to do with my bad indigestion (that came back negative)

I’ve been given a swabbing of the mouth to check for strep bacteria (that came back negative)

I went to an ent last week and she basically had a quick feel of the neck and jaw and said everything felt fine (It definitely doesn’t feel fine in my opinion since I knew what it felt like before and it didn’t feel anything like this it was soft before and now it feels hard) and she took a quick look in my mouth and said she saw a bit of pus. Then she took a quick look with a camera in my throat and said everything looked fine. Then she said she didn’t know what was wrong but she thinks it’s tonsillitis so she told me to get a tonsillectomy. Basically That was the whole appointment!!!!

I mean I’ve got 2 symptoms of tonsillitis and she tells me to get my tonsils out! What if it’s not tonsillitis? I mean the strep bacteria test came back negative? I don’t want to get my tonsils out for nothing if it has nothing to do with my tonsils!!

I’ve already been on 2 lots of antibiotics and they didn’t work so I can’t use those again!

What if it’s my thyroid and that’s why the front and sides of my neck are swelling up?? She didn’t even get a test to check my thyroid!! Does anyone know if problems with thyroid can affect the tonsils and cause pus?

My main concern is that if I’m going to have this tonsillectomy and it turns out it wasn’t even the tonsils causing all this that the surgery would have been all for nothing!!! I want to know for sure that it is tonsillitis before I have a surgery like that done!

Also In the test that checked for mono I was also told that I’m anaemic and also that I have some type of infection in the body due to a high white blood cell count but they still don’t know what the infection is after all this time! When I had a blood test done for a different reason over a year ago I was told I had an infection in the body then as well so I’m not sure if it’s the same one or a different one?? I also have a few small red pimple like dots showing up on the top of my legs, my arms, my belly and my neck as well and it’s only started happening since this all started so I don’t know if that has anything to do with this as well!

I’m just so confused because no one knows 100% sure what this is! I reckon it’s either tonsillitis or something with my thyroid! I’ve decided to get my thyroid checked either this week or next week!

If someone’s gone through something similar plz tell me how you got through it and what ended up being wrong? This is driving me crazy!! I mean I’ve been going through all this discomfort for about 3 and a bit months now!! I’m so scared that it’s something bad! 😭😭😭

An interactive thyroid can cause something called a goitre, so it could be that. I know in the UK we can do home thyroid tests, it's worth looking to see if you can do something in Australia. You'd be looking to test TSH, T4, T3 and thyroid antibodies

I’ll definitely look into doing that!! Although I might be going to get my thyroid checked at the gp this week (if they can do it there that is)

Autocorrect changed that from under-active to interactive...

Hope your doc can help, though they may only test TSH and T4,so it would be worth looking into your own test as well.

Hm that’s strange why wouldn’t they check for T3 as well? But yeah I hope I’ll finally be able to get some answers soon. Also What does a home test consist of?
