I just started again.

I have decided to join slimming world for now because of the act of going and getting weighed.

How do others get on with potatoes and meat being free foods? ( as long as no added fat).

Hi Aqua_marine and welcome back to the forum. I haven't done Slimming World so can't really comment on the free foods. We do have some members who have been or are still SW members so maybe they will reply to you on that part.

I'm sure you'll be able to find you way around the site but as a reminder, if you go to Pinned Posts, that's where you'll find the list of our thread for members to join in with. Here's a link to the Pinned Posts to get you started healthunlocked.com/weight-l...

We recommend that you at least join in with the Daily Diary and the Weigh In, perhaps you can tie in the latter with the day you have your SW meeting, or the morning after? This forum is all about peer to peer support so i'm sure we can help you along your journey.

Best of luck and get stuck in :-) xx

I will join a weigh in post. I have only restarted 8 days ago. Haven’t decided on my regular weigh in day. Maybe Saturday. I will not be posting my start weight etc. only my results loss/sets/gain.

Decided to give it a go. Will see how it goes.

Hi and welcome back :)

It would be worthwhile asking your SW leader why they are considered free foods - and particularly as they are so different, in terms of how they are digested and absorbed by the body.

I wish you the best of luck with your diet. I'm sure SW has some logic behind potatoes being "free foods". Without knowing the rest of the menu it would be difficult to comment. Having experience and researching how carbohydrates and insulin work together, it baffles me.

However, SW is working within the UK borders... if there was anything dodgy with their math, they would probably have been regulated into bankruptcy by now so I wouldn't worry about it too much until after you have asked how it works.

Are you meaning WW or SW ? As they have different ways of working.

SW. Ty for pointing that out.

No worries

I don’t know enough to understand it either. I don’t think they expect you to exclusively eat carbs. As you are not allowed much in the way of fats I think you couldn’t eat that much before boredom set in 😂

Hi. I have been struggling for a while now with my weight. Got up to over 18 stone. So just before Xmas last year I joined slimming world. Just for the weigh in. I am still with them coz my bmi was k er 28 so I got 24 weeks free. That's only in Northamptonshire. The council are sponsoring it. I have lost over 5 stone. Potatoes arr great. Use fry light alit so have chips. Yes chips cooked in an air fryer. They are nice. Just trust it and try. I look and feel much better for it. I now weigh 12 stone 12lbs. I want to get down to 11 stone eventually. I originally set my target for q2 stone 7lbs. Never thought I would make it. But I am nearly there

Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply toLadytrucker1

It was free here too but for 12 weeks 👍

You can apply for a 2nd lot of 12 if your bmi is still over 28. My original I was nearly 41 its not 29

Ah, that's brilliant. I don't think they have that here but, I joined before covid so may have changed.

Hi there,I've done slimming World and can vouch that it works although I swapped white potatoes for sweet potatoes and am vegetarian so had alternatives instead. So long as you stick to the healthy options, keep your syns in range and include lots of speed foods, it works.

All lean meat and eggs is free foods, fill up on them and lots of veg+fruit. I liked doing slimming world in the summer cos lots of salad veg are nice eating when it's warm. I cannot face eating salads in winter LOL

Only free foods carb wise are potatoes, pasta and rice. Bread is not free and if you eat 3 slices of white bread in a day that is your syn total! I think there is some scientific reasoning behind allowing some carbs and not others. Must be the way they break down in the body 🤷‍♀️

I think any diet works IF sticking with it. Good luck to you 😊 my problem is the afterwards, need to maintain some sort of accountability rather than just throwing in the towel and going back to my old habits 😜

Hi Aqua, I did SW for a significant time. Initially it reaps good weight loss if you have a high BMI. But never lasted and I always ended up heavier if I’m honest (my own fault of course). The main point , as you will know, is a third of your plate has to be vegetables…which doesn’t mean potatoes (some folks think potatoes are classed as vegs).

The carbohydrates can be potatoes, pasta, rice etc….I believe If you have high blood sugar in particular, it’s far from the ideal health balance for weight loss…just my own opinion. I felt SW thought me to eat ‘A Lot’. Instead of changing my unhealthy habits, long term and learning to eat less but healthier. I felt it allowed me to say ‘oh it’s free so I’ll have it’. I have lost a good bit of weight by following the NHS diet and learning to eat differently xx

It’s what works for you Aqua and I wish you all the best x

I hate to see you say "my own fault of course" when it's quite possible it's the diet's fault, not yours.

Have to say I've never signed up to the paid for diet companies - I'm so glad I found this forum - as the idea of "syns" and "free" foods just seems to maintain the negative associations with food. And all those carbohydrates ..... :o

It's just a thing I have :) There's nothing sinful about food and thinking that way about it gets us into a mess :)

Hello Aqua, I have been following SW since 2018 & it works for me. I have tried pretty much everything and whilst being a SW member I have been in and out of Target ( but only by a few pounds) during those years but going and weighing in ( even during covid) has made me accountable. I have adapted the SW diet to suit me - as I cannot eat copious amounts of carbs see what works for you.

in reply todietcheese

I am giving it a full on go. I will asses at 3 months ( allowing a blip for holiday).

It is quite nice to not to feel guilty about a potato.

Hi I do SW & I think you just have to be realistic with all "free" foods..keep to a portion size that keeps you full enough. Free foods still have a calorie value..my losses are less when i have had a lot of carbs, particularly Pasta as they just affect me that way..see how it goes and adjust to suit you
