Many moons ago June, I lost about 3 1/2st, then lost the plot and started to put it back on and was too ashamed to go back :o

I was still in "diet" mode, so didn't learn how to change my lifestyle/healthy eating.

Don't know how you can be in diet mode- sw is healthy eating !

You can still be in diet mode even if you're eating healthily, Libby. It's all about your mindset :)

Yes I suppose so, but surely all of us who are prone to weight gain have to be in "diet mode" to lose weight? After all, farmhouse cheese and crusty bread is "healthy" but you wont lose weight on it.

I like to think of it as being mindful, the same way that slim people remain slim by thinking about what they're eating and making wise choices, but they wouldn't consider themselves as dieting :)

libbydaniels88 in reply to moreless

I don't know, I tend to think there are weight gainers and non weight gainers in life, and if a person is a weight gainer, like me, its difficult to make the right choices without some boundaries. I've always been the one to go for sweet things for instance, where my mother, who only gained 8 lbs in her life, and that was me 😊 has never eaten much sweet stuff, and can open a bar of chocolate, eat a square, and wrap the rest up for two weeks! My choices , left to my own devices are wrong, so to lose weight I have to make mindful LOWER calorie choices.

If you think of the people on this site who are maintaining after having lost huge amounts of weight, they were obviously weight gainers, but they're not dieters, they've learnt how to moderate their urges and are mindful about what they eat, in order to maintain.

I will never again refer to myself as a dieter, as diets have a start and a finish and if you haven't learnt to be mindful about what you're eating, you will regain and have to become a "dieter" again - yoyo "dieting" is one of the most unhealthy and unhappy places in the world. I know, I've been there!

I am no longer a dieter, I am a mindful, healthy eater, who at the moment still needs to lose weight, but at some time, in the not-too-distant future, will be a healthy weight and still be a mindful, healthy eater :)

I agree with moreless learning to change lifestyle/healthy eating is best. Good planning and portion control can sort it all out. Change for life!

I have been before and joined up again, it works well for lots of people and I have had success in the past, seems like a healthy approach? Calorie counting can be restrictive I find and I tend to eat rubbish where there is less leeway for this on sw x

hi June yes i'm on the new sw and my weight has started to drop so me and you first to lose 10lb, i must admit i've lost three already and i've only been on for two weeks so my friend join me its up to you i'm game or you your friend Alan xx

I have never actually joined SW... But the approach and many of the recipes in the magazine seem sensible, although I draw the line at artificial sweeteners, but I do like to eat a lot and a lot of fresh fruit and veg, so it suits me to incorporate some of their ideas into my lifestyle.

I love slimming world it's the only way for me I have lost 2 stones. It's about changing your eating habits for life it's not a diet it's about changes. You will never go hungry on sw plus you can still have your sweet tweets. Hope this helps

In all the diets I have tried, Slimming World is not one I tried. I had given up on diets until I found NHS 12 week weight loss program, (which is free) and my life will never be the same again. 👙👙👙

Someone I knew did Slimming World. She lost weight and was very proud and happy. Unfortunately she gained it all again and was disappointed. So my belief is, to keep slim you have to keep being a member. I don't know if this include healthy.

I also understand Slimming World is a business and you have to pay for the service. They also sell meals. I heard that their recipes on the net are very tasty.

I understand the CEO of Weight Watchers, during an interview, boasted about being a repeat business. People join, lose, gain and join again.

On one of my previous fancy diet, Easy Slim, I was buying their frozen meals and was always hungry so put on weight as I would have two meals instead of one. It did not work for me.

I hope whatever you do will give you the result you want. It is such a bummer to be overweight. My life now is so beautiful I kick myself to have waited so long to find something which worked for me.

libbydaniels88 profile image
libbydaniels88 in reply to nhs2015

Well its only very recently that sw has sold meals. In fact, since joining I have cooked more fresh foods than in my life! I used to eat out of cardboard boxes marked " less than xxx cals" I never buy ready meals now.

Yes, anyone can put the weight back on. Your friend probably stopped following her plan, as many of us have done, with similar results, I e weight gain, whether they lost at SW or not.

People prone to weight gain have to watch their food intake FOR LIFE and sw helps you do this on a long term basis.

nhs2015 in reply to rogbert

Good on you rogbert, you obviously have a good healthfund. While you continue your membership with the diet company you will surely lose weight.

I prefer a sustainable system like NHS than going on a diet. This is why I went on their 12 week program a year ago. I did not want a diet (been there, done that). I wanted a free sustainable program. I wanted something to help me change my bad eating habits and making me healthy, fit, slimmer, and at 68 soon 69 life is smiling at me. It really worked for me. And this NHS forum is really helpful.

There was some controversies about diet meals which although very tasty were proven to be unhealthy, full of added sugar and lacking some nutrients So I would stay away from them.

I have learn through this forum about the dangers of sweeteners. You may lose weight but your health will suffer.

Finally, think about going to the doctor regularly to have a full blood test. With my last one, I found that my cholesterol had dropped dramatically (so happy) and my borderline towards type 2 diabetes is non existent.

Good luck with your journey.

i'm not on a diet as i have already informed you all its a change of eating habit for life you just have to eat the right food combinations ie no fat no sugar low carbs lots of vegitables and fruit little meat lots of fish not coated in bread crumbs or batter like tuna and salmon

Hi June I am not sure about slimming world I only tried weight watchers for years on and off and got to goal in my twenties then gradually over the years put weight back on and kept going on and off only to get fatter !! :-) I have heard good and bad things re SW i suppose it depends on if you like weighing in weekly etc and prefer being part of a club that gives you ideas etc. Its whatever suits individually.

The thing I have found is no matter which method used to lose weight it has to mean my mind is in the right place, as when i went to w.w i used to find ways to cheat and end up eating things to fill the points! ;-)

I finally realize after years of yo yo dieting the only way forward is taking bull by the horns and trying to go forward with a really simple plan .

I don`t think ive helped you at all there have I ? just went off on a little ramble ! :-)

Let us know how it goes if you join sw June ! :-)

Yes midnightmunchie, I did the same yo yo dieting. WW, ES, and a few more. Very disappointing and unhealthy. I even got a specific diet program from a dieteticiant. So restrictive! Worked for a while then I just crashed. The worse diet I recall was no carbohydrate diet where I the ballooned as soon as a went back on bread........ Now I have reduced carbohydrate but enough to be healthy, to fill me up and to get the correct nutrients.

It takes a lot of self control to lose weight but this forum helps and the results are worth the hassle.

Midnight-munchie profile image
Midnight-munchie in reply to nhs2015

I was exactly the same nhs 2015 I also did a diet called the scarsdale diet which is very low carb and lost masses of weight got really slim and then as soon as I began eating (not overeating) just eating a normal range of food I put tons back on and have ended up with numerous health issues from it and a very messed up system.

I think if people can find a healthy lifestyle /plan that works well for them it is a great way forward.

I personally now find eating smaller amounts of normal food and not tying so much emotionally into my food and making small goals helps me.

I also have come to realize that the only way I can sort this is by not getting caught in a diet cycle always thinking I will enjoy things when Im slim but instead just slow and steady and giving myself time.

I think so many on here have had the same journey!

I paid for weight watchers forever and never used to get anywhere! :-)

Hi midnight munchie, I think you have the right attitude. You are approaching the weight problem with a cool head and a lot of common sense. Yep, this is exactly how it works.

Everyone is different, it's whatever works for you, be mindful what ever you choose

1. you need to stick with for life be it e.g 5/7 days for example, you can't go back to your old ways

2. We are like alcoholics in remission but not cured

I think a lady from work goes to slimming world it's free providing she keeps within 3lb +\- goal. For me I weigh in weekly here it's kept my weight pretty steady and healthy BMI, once you reach goal maintainance is not easy, you have to decide how you are going to keep it off

The sw book has nice recipes 👍🏾

June, go on nhs.uk click on the "live well" tab then under "most read healthy living topics" click on "top diets review for 2016" you will find an unbiased review on SW.

Knowledge is power. If you add on more knowledge to all the comments you get from people on the SW diet, it should give you a more informative perspective.

Good luck on your journey.
