Fasting until New years- and beyond?!

Hello! My name is Ruby, this is me writing on the night of Christmas, just finished eating my indulgent last meal and I feel ready to see how long I can go without food, I'll be posting my updates daily about my weight, progress, and experience of water fasting xx

I've always struggled with binge eating and restrictive 'damage control' and at the moment I'm just in need of some change.

Dear HowLongUntilDinner, I'm sure that many of us are feeling the same as you after eating a whopping Christmas meal. Personally I would be punishing myself if I attempted a water fast for a week.

You don't mention your current weight,a sustainable weight loss plan or your target weight.

This is the link to our pinned posts where you'll find our Daily Diary where we share our daily food plan, plus our weekly weigh in where we both obtain and give support.

You're very welcome to join in with all of our activities. We find that joining in is the key to success, I hope to see you on the daily Diary when you have decided on your plan. :)

HI, HLUD, welcome to the forum.

Maybe I've misunderstood what you're planning but it sounds very like binge eating and restrictive damage control so I don't see how it's different from what you've tried before - and I assume that hasn't been successful.

Possible the wisest advice I ever heard here is that if the way you lose weight isn't sustainable, then the weight loss won't be sustainable. To me, it makes sense to find a way of losing weight that you can see yourself living with in 5 years, 10 years ...

All the best for 2025 :)

Hi Ruth, I'm a binge eater, and try to weigh in weekly, aiming to lose weight and not binge eat compolsively. I hope you find a good plan that suits soon to take into the new year.

Welcome to this very supportive forum. I will just add my two penneth to the caution and concern of the others. Have you looked for professional or peer support for your eating disorder. I would strongly urge you to do so if you’re trying to deal with this alone. Secondly, what we weigh on the scales is a fairly rudimentary measure of our health. If you feel you need to lose body fat ( what we all call weightloss) then just be mindful that with complete fasting you will start to lose muscle mass as well as maybe some body fat, plus a lot of water. So the number you see on the scales after the period of non-eating will not necessarily show fat loss.. If you decide that a program of eating mindful, balanced , nutritional meals is a better option you will get tons of help, advice and support on here I’m sure. Anyway, whatever you decide is best for you, take care of yourself.

Hi, how are you getting on? I've done water fasts before, and have enjoyed the extra energy and mental clarity you get from not eating. I've usually not fasted longer than 72-84 hours though. Just make sure you listen to your body (you'll know when you're ready to eat), and obviously drink plenty of water. If you're fasting longer than 3 days, you'll probably need electrolytes n such, so do make sure you've got all the info you need to be safe!

i fast twice a week from dawn till dusk and have lost nearly 10 stone now. my experience of longer fasts ( I did a couple of 36hour fasts) was that for me although i lost several pounds it was soon gained back by the binging the longer fasts triggered. It took me a few months to settle my eating back down to normal and to be able to resume my twice weekly fasts.

Well done !Congrats that is amazing.

Can I ask how long did it take to lose 10 stone doing the 2 dawn till dusk fasts ?

Kind regards

Shy

i think it has been about 3 years. Slow and sometimes I have stalled for a while but would rather that than lose it fast and put it all back on again

As part of a lifestyle choice I finish my evening meal before 7pm then only drink water . I eat breakfast around 7.30 am . This has helped with regular digestion . Obviously if I get invited out this breaks the routine . I just maintain . I can’t do with not eating all day as my job is too strenuous . It has never worked with me to skip meals. I eat 3 per day and don’t snack .

Xmas has brought indulgence. I will weigh myself about 2-3 Jan as I don’t intend to overeat and drink everyday . I can’t exercise without food either. Try doing a 20k plus step walk without eating .For me if alone I wouldn’t feel right . I have maintained about 16kg weight loss now since Jan 2018 . I am not super skinny . My body seems to cope with this . I started at 80kg , am now 62- 64 kg . I am 5 ft 1 so still fall in as overweight but I think at 64 years old to have a flat stomach I have to just cope with bingo wings and wrinkles.

Ooh that sounds severe and unrealistic. I much prefer to limit my portion sizes, perhaps halfing what I would consider a portion and not eat any sugar or alcohol. At the end of the day it has to be a long term lifestyle change and not a binge/starve cycle. Good luck and take care

Please take care when considering any extreme plans, such as drinking half your body weight in water (1 litre = around 2 1/4 lbs, or 1kg). Overhydration can be dangerous.

Don't know where you are but our tap water is healthy and free (once you've paid your water rates) so no need for bottles. And as for half your body weight :o

I'm sorry Showcase777, you say that you starting weight is 196, I assume pounds. That means if you practice what your preaching, you will be drinking about 90 pounds of water every day.

Try proof reading before you post such misleading, potentially dangerous rubbish.

I don't follow this rule but, it's half your body weight in OUNCES not pounds.

Thanks for that info Dippyeggs, no-one else has explained that :)

why don’t you just cut down eat sensibly step up the exercise and enjoy your life?

I can’t imagine anything more miserable than doing odd things with fasting and water and things like that. I prefer just living life and having fun.

I once I had licked the misery eating then the weight fell off. My husband died very unexpectedlyin January , it’s coming up for a year next weekend and I know I’ve put some on but I also know that I haven’t eaten that chocolate that all the kind people have brought me and I haven’t sunk into a bottle but I have faced up to it.

I’m not suggesting you have anything particularly to face up to. I’m just suggesting that life is tough and it’s a far better idea just to enjoy it.

kindness is the most wonderful thing and the people on this forum have been immeasurably kind to me and they will be kind to you
