Weight loss difficulties

I fell ill with a debilitating illness at 14 years old. Dropped out of school because of it, haven't been able to return to education or work since. Mainly housebound, started eating my feelings, grieved the person I once was. I put on quite a lot of weight, since then I have fluctuated. I keep trying to loose weight and I loose half a stone then relapse and put it on again. I've been to a weight loss class for a while but mainly done it myself the other times. I've even looked into surgery (gastric band) I've been on antidepressants, I can't stop eating. I feel like its the only pleasure that I experience in life, I don't have friends, not much family not really any support. I can go days without speaking to anyone, I live alone. I don't get counselling even though I've asked and asked for help, I've even asked for antidepressants. They're not keep on giving me them? I don't know why, or the Dr's don't think I'm depressed enough I don't know. I am 12. 6 stone as of last week when I weighed myself, I'm a really short person at 5.2 so I am classed as moderately obese on the BMI scale. I'm really struggling to keep motivated too, I've spent almost 2 weeks in bed watching TV and missing appointments because I'm so depressed I can't even get up to get dressed or face going out. So how am I to exercise when it feels so hard? The illness I have other than depression is a debillitating neurological disease that the main symptom makes me tired and I have brain fog. So pulling myself out of bed is hard anyway, I need some advice on what to do.

I'm sorry that you've not received the support you so clearly need and have asked for. I'm really pleased that you've been brave enough to set out the difficulties you are having here.

I feel a good starting point for you might be the Mind Information helpline?

mind.org.uk/information-sup...

Infoline: 0300 123 3393 - Open 9am - 6pm Monday to Friday

You may also need to work on emotions around eating - try keeping a diary along side your food log so that you can identify anything which triggers a binge or a downwards spiral - and the emotional side of things may be something you need to work on or get further help with if it appears out of your control.

I am much shorter than you (4ft 8") and have a physical disability that prevents me from exercising. I use a wheelchair outside of the house. I weighed 14 stone when I started my weight loss journey back in 2012.

I was seriously considering gastric bypass surgery when but decided to have one last ditch attempt to lose weight rather than go for the surgery. As part of that decision, I spoke to two friends who'd recently had a gastric bypass and realised that it was by no means the easy way out and that what I would be able to eat would be compromised for the rest of my life. I knuckled down and started to log everything I ate and weigh out portions. I soon realised why I had struggled to lose weight - and indeed how I had become 4/5 stone overweight in the first place! Slowly, the weight started to come off. It took 2.5 years for me to lose that 4.5 stone, but I did it.

As an aside, both friends who had the gastric bypass lost significant amounts of weight (probably about 8 stone...) but both of them have regained that weight.

Have you looked at online counselling? It's a smaller waiting list and you can refer yourself. Just Google online counselling. Good luck with it. If your interested in light of keto take a look on dietdoctor.com they have a 2 week free meal plan to help you to get started. Good luck hun

Hello and welcome, PurpleRainn :)

I'm sorry things have been so difficult for you. This is a friendly and supportive place, as you will have seen from the three replies you've had already. Many members have health or personal difficulties and I think that by getting involved here, chatting and supporting others, you will find it all pays off for you.

A good place to start is by joining a weekly weigh in and using the Daily Diary, where members share their meal plans. You'll find them and our Welcome Newbies post which explains how the forum works, in our Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

All the best :)

Hi I’m similar 5ft 2 and 12st 3 starting weight. Just started here too. I’ve gained weight due to health issues too. Fibromyalgia and chronic back spinal injury from a car crash many years ago. Resting is what’s piling on the weight for me. I’ve found swimming and having saunas really mood boosting. Have you thought about swimming? Is it possible to try a low impact exercise to help lose weight. I’ve found going swimming at least once a week has stopped me gaining weight for the last year but I need to do nhs diet to lose weight hopefully.

sorry youve had such a rough trot and not got much support, you will definetly get plenty of that here though. maybe drs dont want to give you anti depressants as so addictive.

dont try to do it all at once little changes everyday is the way to go and 80 % of weight loss is what we eat and only 20% exercise so concentrate on what goes in to start with. i have arthritis and ME and other than walking my dog dont exercise but still loosing weight. concentrate on fresh home made meals if you can make them or could family not help out? cut out the sugar and white carbs and good luck
