Having just visited the doctor after putting on a stone and half over the past year and a half, he recommended i check how many calories i should be eating. At present i am on 1200 which is low he said. He is sending me for a blood test to check hyperthyroidism. I have never been in a position where weight has been an issue for me, always had a high metabolism. My BMI says I am overweight. I workout at the gym 4 times a week. However, my job as a clinical typist - sat for 8 hours a day - doesn't help (I do love my job though).
Any thoughts on healthy eating tips. I told the doctor I snack on nuts thinking they were a good intake, but he told me they are full of fat.

I suspect you mean hypothyroidism and suggest you join the Thyroid UK forum to get some good advice before your blood tests. healthunlocked.com/thyroiduk
I agree that 1200 calories sounds too low and suggest you get a personal calorie allowance from the NHS BMI calculator.
Nuts are full of fat, but fat is nothing to be scared of and much better for you than carby snacks. You may be interested to read these?
The menopause can be a hindrance to many. I'd like to blame it myself but my eating habits leave a little to be desired.
Over the years advice has changed on fat. The body does also need fat and as Moreless says it is nothing to be scared of. Do read the links she has given.
Interestingly a colleague of mine just the other week was saying how she really struggled with her weight through the menopause despite eating healthily and exercising. Suddenly she got through the menopause and the weight started dropping off her. I live in hope.
Hi I eat nuts as I'm vegetarian and as long as I stick to a palm full each day as a mid morning or afternoon snack woth fruits and avoid dry roasted or salted nuts I'm fine and I loose weight. I also go gym regularly and am pre menopausal. I'm office based too. I find sticking to the diet religiously Monday to Friday and giving myself a treat on Saturday..just a single treat mind..helps. I only loose a pound a week but at least this time next year I should be 52lbs lighter. My treat is usually a few glasses of wine with friends. Keep going. You will get there.
