I am 60 and have osteoarthritis in my knees and hip. I need to loose 4 st and keep active to aid my joint pain. Have bought an exercise bike as I find this easier than walking. Do it watching tv.

Hi and welcome, Wendy :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hello Wendy your purchase of the bike was a good move as it will strengthen your muscles. Also there is research to show it helps with fat burn if you do HIT ( high interval training ) 3 times a week. Basically you bike at an easy level for a while then you crank up the resistance level and pedal as hard as you can for 10 secs gradually building up to 20 sec, no more than that, You then pedal slowly till you get your breath back . During a 10 min session you do 3 periods of 10 to 20 secs. You may want to check with your GP that it is ok for you to do this.

I am 70 with arthritis in one knee but am fine doing it . That combined with daily swimming keeps me mobile and I find with my recent weight loss I can walk without pain.

Hope this helps you get going

Best wishes

Thank you so much for such an encouraging reply. I find the cycling less painful than the walking on my knees at the moment, I used to love walking. I am hoping this will change with weight loss. Thank you

Hi Wendy I'm 37 and have osteoarthritis in my knees too, I really feel for you it is just awful. I have recently got an excersise bike too and find it ok on my knees. Let's hope we both start to feel better soon!! Xxx

Me too - hips and knees, I'm 45. I've also lost 2.5 stone over the past year and its made a huge difference. Still got a little more to go, but I can tell the strain on my knees especially is less. Go for it Emspowell and WendyB2017 - its definitely worth it!

Well done!
