Hello everyone,

Well today is day 1 of the NHS 12 week weight loss plan, I am now embarrassed to say that this is the most I have ever weighed - 15 stone 13 and I'm 5 ft 3.

My body aches and I feel really tired and unhappy with myself so my doctor recommended I try this. Reading through the NHS information has brought me to this link so I thought I would register and give it a go, there seems to be lots of information and inspiration here so I hope to gain a few tips and start losing weight and feeling better.

Thank you.

Hello Westo1 and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask

Best wishes

Anna

Hi Westo, welcome to the group. Don't feel embarrassed you and I are both about the same weight and height and that is after me losing almost three stone so I started off a lot heavier than you. This is a fantastic group where you will get lots of tips, advice and support. I even went a step further by putting my picture on as I am determined that this is the last time I lose weight as I am definitely keeping it off. I don't know if there is anyone else from my area on this site but if there is they will see who I am. I would never have done that previously but as this is the final time I lose weight, as from now on it will stay off, I don't care that people see who I am and what I weigh as it is going down and will never go up to the 18st 8lbs that I started at. This is one of my many tricks to keep me on track. So don't feel embarrassed things are going to get better for you over the months. Onwards and downwards.

Don't worry about anything to do with your weight or loss we are all doing this remember. Also I would like to advise you with one thing I only found out on here by someone who has now left but would like to make sure many others don't also make this same mistake as I struggled for years to lose any weight anywhere. Check out your calories on the NHS bmi calculator as this gives you two amounts to eat between to be able to lose weight. Do make sure you don't eat any lower than the lowest amount advised as this is what I used to do and this was my problem. If you don't eat enough calories your body thinks your starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. Please don't make this same mistake. I have lost 2 1/2st since eating the right amount of calories so am really pleased I was informed of this. Good luck with your journey.

Thank you that is really interesting and useful to know - the NHS 12 week weight loss plan suggests 1400 calories for a woman but the lower figure for me on the BMI calculator is over 1600 so I'm glad you have explained this as I was thinking I must stick to the 1400. In fact I think I maybe have been eating too little as today I feel I have eaten much more and I am well within the limits suggested for my BMI, thank you for this advice . X
