Stood on step of shame and immediately signed up to 12 week plan!

Good morning everyone, I'm new to the plan and forum ... in fact I'm a technophobe who has never used forums etc before so thus is a first! I stepped on the scales this morning and I weigh more than I ever have. I don't seem to be able to stick to a healthy diet .... I usually last 6 days then fall back off the wagon. Working long hours makes slimming clubs difficult and then I end up paying for the privilege of being told no I'm not slimmer of the week and I weigh just a bit more than last time. I felt quite despondent before checking out the forum. Anyway, with 4 1/2 stone to lose, I'm really glad to be on here. There seems to be a great sense of support and community and just reading other people's posts leaves me feeling hopeful. Have a brilliant day everyone 😊

Hi and welcome Sandra200

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker nhs.uk/tools/pages/healthyw... to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's :) and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Wishing you all the best on your journey :)

Thank you for the lovely welcome and helpful tips. I'll spend some time today finding my way around the forum. It was interesting that you talk about eating enough. I try to stick to 1400 when trying to stick to a diet and weightloss is always very slow if at all even when I do stick to it, but the nhs bmi calculator is suggesting I should be eating 1650 to 2000 calories a day and I'm scared that if I up my calories I will gain even more.

in reply toSandra200

i was like this and when I stuck within that range I actually started losing - I have been off work this week on hols and eaten and drank far too much but only gained 1.04lb so hopefully with being back in routine next week I will get my 1 stone badge :)

Have a look at the daily diaries - good place to steal ideas :)

We always recommend starting at the higher end of the suggested range Sandra200 This is proven to make the plan more sustainable long term as well as being the most effective way to make your body use up excess fat. 😀

Hello and welcome Sandra200

There is no 'step of shame' in my book, the number on the scales is just that, a number, it does not define who you are 😀

You have already had a lovely welcome from this friendly and supportive forum, and I wish you luck in your journey

Best wishes

Hi Willow, thank you for your message. How are you todau. sorry to hear about your gain. Don't be discouraged, take one day at a time I find it doesn't seem like such a mo u mental task then .... I sound like the voice if experience but generally I am very god st getting it wrong and I think I just get too busy and overwhelmed. I've started following you so maybe we can support each other. I had a good 1st week and counted everything but we have 3 family celebrations this week and although I'm trying to make healthy choices it's very hard and I come from a long line of feeders! First meal out was an Italian set menu with lots of olive oil and cheese 😮 just impossible to count so haven't tried. I'll just try to keep increasing activity and make all my other meals super healthy. What are you using to count calories?

in reply toSandra200

Hi Sandra,

Using Nutracheck like Linda just mentioned, it's really good xxx

You are where I was in March, now I have to lose 3 stone. Counting calories really works.

Oh wow! That's amazing well done. Just got my fitness pal to log food. It seems to be easyto find everything on the database. X

Lindakirk profile image

I use the Nutracheck app and I'm finding it really good to log all my food and exercise. Its 3.99 a month which I feel is a lot cheaper than slimming clubs.

I will have to check that out Linda thanks, I've not heard of that one before. It seems to be working for you though ... 1 stone is amazing. 😊

Hello and welcome Sandra!

The NHS 12 week plan has some great tips for working away eating out and travelling for work all of which contributed to weight gain for me. Pleased to say that following the tips, planning, careful choices, support here and working at it sees me now lost almost a stone in 10weeks.

Use the support and you can do it!

Hi Clare, thank you for your message, it is very encouraging. I just got week 1 of the plan yesterday and I'm feeling very motivated. I would say studying, work and too little sleep have been big factors for me. Sometimes I feel too tired to prioritise myself but I've been reading some of the tips on here this evening and I'm going to focus on good habits one day at a time. The support here is amazing and I'm blown away by how welcoming everybody is. A stone in 10 weeks is incredible. Are you managing to exercise much?

ClareMcr profile image
ClareMcrRestart April 2024 in reply toSandra200

Yes I am exercising 3-4 days a week walk run or cycle and most weeks I fit in the two strength sessions it recommends. Three weeks ago I spotted I'd got the dreaded bingo wings so I'm doing tricep exercises to keep the arms toned!

Me too with the tiredness if you know a day is very tough make that a rest day and the others days you exercise. Keep tracking the calories every day and you'll find it does get easier.

Hi Clare following your reply I dug out my Gillian Michaels yoga meltdown dvd, previously used as a cup rest! ... Well my muscles may take a few days to recover but thank you for inspiring me to start. Also been walking the dog daily so a couple of small positive changes. Sure they will pay off. It struck me that there's a lot of variety in your exercise regime, appealing as I have a low boredom threshold lol! Keep up the good work with your journey x

Hi Sandra,

Thanks 🙏🏻 for your support, not sure 🤔 what happened last week, I was doing so well for 3 days then suddenly, mood swings, poor hubby only had to say hello and I jumped in it 😤😤 food was my release, don't know why because I feel so dam angry 😡 with myself afterwards.

Going through the menopause doesn't help.

But since last Friday, ok 👌 logging everything down eating 3 meals a day, using a calorie site which is brilliant, hopefully I will be smiling Friday.

Not able to exercise or even walk to much at the moment as waiting for surgery on my knee.

Is everything going ok with you, you sound really positive, are you a good cook, do you like cooking from scratch.

I like the Hairy Bikers Diet books recipes in there very tasty.

Hope your having a lovely day xx

Hi Willow 25 sorry it's taken so long for me to reply. We'll done for logging, this week sounds like it's going much better good for you! Don't envy you going through menopause, pmt is bad enough! I must admit I've lost the plot this week. I'm feeling so tired all the time and craving Carbs so I'm not looking forward to weigh in on Sunday. I've visited my mom every day this week which is unusual, but she's a nurturer and a feeder lol so as nice as that is, it isn't very slimming. Just saw your other message about nutracheck so I'll definitely check that out. I do love cooking and I actually have one of the hairy cookbooks, I'll have to dig it out as I've never used it. I recently started a ladies running club ... I literally can wall faster than I run! But it's a beginners course and very supportive but I've had to miss last 3 weeks for one reason or another. I do see a positive change in my mood when I go and really miss it when I don't. Have you looked at exercise you can do that won't put pressure on your knee e.g swimming? You have a brilliant week and keep upthe good work. 😆👍

Don't class it as a diet , a healthy eating challenge works for me and welcome
