Hello Beverleyjayne7366 and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum
Very well done on stopping smoking and I do hope you are recovering well from your heart attack. Sometimes these events can be pivotal in promoting us towards making a long term commitment to better health and fitness.
Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for
Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask
Best wishes
Anna
Hi Beverleyjayne7366 when I first joined I had trouble losing weight as well and when I informed people on here I had someone ask me how many calories I was having because if you don't eat the right amount you don't lose weight. I was told to make sure I checked the NHS bmi calculator as this tells you how many to eat to be able to lose weight. I was only eating around 1000 calories and should have been have around 500-800 more a day. This was because my body actually thought I was starving it so was turning what I did eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes means that you can put weight on as well. I upped the amount of calories I was eating to the right amount and then started losing weight and have now lost 2st. Please don't make this same mistake as well and good luck with your journey.
Hi Bev a heart attack?! What a shocker. I hope everything is under control now and you're feeling better.
You're my age-51 and I gave up cigs too. I need to lose just under 3 stone and I too have been struggling. So here I am. Fingers crossed we'll smash this. As another member has said we should eat the cals allowed. I guess scientists, nutritionists and the experienced can't be wrong 😊
Some good advice, which I shall take account of myself. I have only been on this site for an hour after joining this evening. Clearly it is beneficial when we share experience, we are all different but each may share certain of each others attributes. I gave up smoking six months ago after years of trying. This was easy by comparison with loosing weight, and indeed they are counter-productive to some degree. I joined the Gym today as a slimming club only put on weight, but I am eating better quality food though! The gym if taken sensibly can be of assistance. It is not just for young holiday makers wanting to loose a few pounds. If you are unsure just sit outside and see who toddles out. The Gym is a good long distance run, not a sprint. Whatever you are doing it is a good companion and you will again find like minded and similarly placed people from whom you can learn.
Good luck. Failure is not an option. So be inspired - it can also be fun.
Thanks everyone x
