Doctors this morning after mega blood tests, wasn't surprised to be told have dangerously high cholesterol but was surprised he thinks it's not diet related considering i'm about 5 stone overweight. I have googled it and just confused. Also anemic. Does anyone know whats going on? Apparently being rushed to see the heart specialist, should I be worried. I'm 49. All my realtives died in their 60s from heart attacks and dad had quad-bipass. Is n't cholesterol all about diet? DOn't I just need to lose weight? Getting nervous

Start dealing yourself a lifestyle change now, you know you are overweight, you said so.
Think about what you are eating and ditch sugar and refined carbohydrates a s a start. Processed foods, even the low cal diet meals are full of sugar and unhealthy fats.
Have a look at the Daily Diary thread and see what others eat, come and join us and allow others to give advice.
Most of all I believe food is your friend and can be healing, don't think of it as an enemy and don't try to restrict calories to unsustainable levels. Check your range on the BMI calculator.
The more you post on this forum the more you will get out of it.
Hi jnette . I don't think any of us on here are qualified to answer your questions, either about anaemia (that's for your doctor to address) or about cholesterol. I do know that cholesterol isn't always to do with diet. I have a slim friend whose family have a history of heart attacks, and she has taken medication for high cholesterol almost all her adult life, along with her young son now who has inherited the same condition. But I also know that being overweight is bad for your health for just about every reason you can think of, so losing weight is very important, and we can help you with that. One of our lovely admin people will point you in the right direction as to how to use this forum. Your doctor should know about this website, and will be pleased you are taking action.
Good luck with your hospital visits and tests, I hope you find a solution,
Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for
Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask
Best wishes
Anna
Hi high cholesterol can run in families and I know some who are very slim. It can come on with being overweight but I think genetics is more important.
My cholesterol was quite high and the nurse said cut out white bread and only eat brown and cut down on cheese. I did and my levels went from 7.4 to 6.2. I don't know if this will help you though, but just a thought.
