Hello Trudy21 and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum
Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for
Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask
Best wishes
Anna
Hi and welcome Trudy21
As a former yo-yo dieter I can understand where you are coming from, I lost weight, gained weight, lost weight gained even more weight
But with some good advice on this forum I'm no longer on a diet, I'm healthy eating and counting calories, the nhs bmi calculator gives a very generous calorie allowance, I haven't banned any food and I have treats all within my allowance.
Making small changes is easier as they are more sustainable, set yourself mini goals (7lb loss, I went swimming, I walked to town, I stayed within my allowance all week) and non-food reward yourself for each goal you achieve (a book, nail polish, magazine, bubble bath)
Find an exercise you enjoy doing, your more likely to stick at it if you're having fun
Keep active on the forum it really does help, join a challenge, weigh in, the daily diary is fantastic for advice, help, support and great ideas, ask questions, chat or just read the posts
Most importantly enjoy your journey and have some fun
Good luck
Kat xx
Hi Trudy21 I totally agree with what Katmt said. I too have been a yo-yo dieter. But back in January I decided to start eating healthily as I wanted to lose 2 stone by the time I celebrated my 60th birthday in March. I achieved my aim and I've carried on eating healthily and have lost a total of 3st 3lbs.
Do NOT think of it as being on a diet, because then you won't allow yourself to eat anything that you think is "naughty". But when you're eating healthily, you can have absolutely anything you want. I've even had a Big Mac, but then I made sure I had something very healthy for my tea. I've also had a great big slice of gooey chocolate cake, but I didn't feel guilty, as I knew I could have something healthy for tea.
As Katmt said.....enjoy your journey and have some fun
Hi and welcome Trudy21
You have received some great advice already and i wish you well on your weight loss journey
Hi good luck on starting.ive tried loads of diets but the nhs 12 plan is the best ive been on.I havent felt hungry once.for every pound ive lost ive been putting in a pot and a 5 bonus for each stone .i never normally excerise and ive been doing walking most days and sit ups only 20 to 30. But it all helps.also walking more upstairs.its week 8 for me and lost 15 pounds.if i can do it anyone can.i used to snack all the time but now plan my meals everyday in advance.i make overnight oats ready for breakfast.swapped to brown bread byt still have treats.low calorie crisps and low calorie jellys and ice lollys to stop the sweet craving.good luck.x
Hi forget diets they don't work unless you stay on them for life. Instead concentrate on healthy eating as this is sustainable. Good luck.
Dieting is far more different from starving. What you just need are balanced diet and proper exercise coupled with motivation and discipline then you are on your way to go for a healthy living.
Make sure you check your calorie intake on the NHS bmi calculator to check how many calories you should eat in between to lose weight. This is important because if you don't eat enough your body thinks you are starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat instead. This weighs more than eating the extra calories does so you don't lose weight and sometimes put weight on. When I found this out I upped my calories to the right amount and have now lost 2st. Most of my body fat has gone and I am much firmer now too. Please don't make this same mistake as it was causing me problems for years. Good luck with your journey.
