Will I loose weight with exercise alone?

Hi all,

I signed up to this weeks ago but haven't yet wanted to post because each day I wake up vowing to start eating healthy and so far it has failed me.

This week though, I had a success! I started running again for the first time since last summer and am managing about 3/4K an evening.

Healthy eating however is another matter, I am vegetarian and I eats heaps of grains, fruit and veg and healthy options but I work long hours and foster three children so I find myself succumbing to the joys (or woes) of takeout or eating out (usually cheap and cheerful options like nandos, or child-friendly pub chains) on an evening as a nice treat. Plus, I'm quite partial to a noise cocktail with friends on a weekend

Is it possible I will loose weight exercising alone? Has anyone got any tips with balancing eating out with healthy food?

*nice cocktail!

personally I think you will not lose weight with exercise alone - you need to start looking at what you eat and the calories you consume

You need to do you BMi and see what calories you should be eating nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyw...

as for fostering - well done but eating and providing them healthy foods is a must in my opinion

I have a friend that does fostering and she cooks healthy meals for the foster kids and I am sorry to say that going out to the establishments you are is not healthy eating

I hope you can turn this around for you and for the foster children

Hi and welcome, Ellie :)

Sadly, it's unlikely that exercise alone, is going to take the weight off for you. I'm sure if you join the C25K forum, you'll find lots of people that have tried.

I think the occasional meal out is fine, but if done too often, then the chances are that at best you won't lose weight and at worse, you'll gain.

When you cook from scratch, you know exactly what's going into your meals and if you bulk cook, you can prepare your own ready meals :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

I agree with the other comments you have received. I started running in March last year but did not lose one single pound until in June when I also changed by diet. Cooking does not have to be very time consuming - I like these "quick and healthy" recipes from BBC Good Food bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/col...

I have never been athletic or sporty but I do enjoy what exercise I do. I am very aware of how hard I have to work to burn off 200 calories and that makes me think really hard about blowing all that effort on rubbish.

Hi Ellie, there's a saying that you can't outrun your fork and unfortunately for most that's true.

I had a similar issue in that time was a big problem and that left me reaching for convenience food. I started carving out a couple of hours on a Sunday to batch cook for the week, healthy meals that the whole family will eat. That meant all I had to do on an evening was heat it up and it's been amazing!! I've lost 6 and a half stone in the past year and cooking healthy meals is no longer such a burden!

just exercise wont help you lose weight but will make you feel fitter... i exercise a lot and my weight loss is very slow... but i find if i exercise i am more mindful about how i eat as i dont want to spend an hour exercising and then waste that effort on a big mac... in order to lose weight you will need to make healthy food choices too x
