Time to stop playing with my health.

Four years ago I posted on here when I had lost just under three and a half stone. Sadly over time most of that crept back on due to complacency and lack of direction.

This year I have decided to try again. I started the year at 18 stone 6 pounds. I am currently sitting at 16 stone 7 pounds. Like the last time I have achieved this through healthy eating, cutting out all unhealthy foods and cooking from scratch. I also fill in a food diary every day. I feel healthier and know that I now have to start exercising. I suffer from hereditary lymphoedema, which means that my legs swell up and become painful throughout the day. Before I lost weight I had to take painkillers every day but in the past few weeks have noticed a reduction in how often I need to take them. Exercise can be painful but I have resigned my self to the fact that if I want to lose weight and keep it off I still have to exercise. I have decided to start with walking, using my exercise bike and doing some toning exercises. I am really unfit but unless I start by making small steps I will never get there as I will lose weight like last time, then fall by the wayside and end up putting it all back on. I hope this time I will be successful and continue to lose.

Welcome back Dipper :)

A lot has happened since you were last here, so I'm going to give you all the newbie information, so that you can reacquaint yourself with the forum :)

I've also awarded you a 2 stone badge, because four years ago, you were 18st 8lbs :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Thank you Moreless, it is good to be back. I really want to continue losing weight and not give up like I did last time. I will have a good look around the site and hopefully get lots of advice and meet new friends. I hate exercising but I know it will become easier as I shed the weight.

Don't worry, most of us have been in the same boat, at least once. I've done it countless times! This time will be the last time for all of us :)

Come and join the exercise challenges, where we keep each other motivated :)

Hi Dipper,

I have recently had the same problem. I lost nearly 3 stone, only to stutter and finally put back on not quite 2 of that. I too got to the point where I managed to get my butt in gear and get back on the forum, and it's definitely helping as things are now starting to go in a downward direction.

I think for me, just getting out in the sunshine helped. Or even when not quite so sunny! :P I also go to the point where if I went upwards any farther I was going to have to get back out all of the clothes I'd put away as being too big. No way was I going to do that!

I think we all just need to find the mind-set and motivation that works best for ourselves. And for me, it is also the knowledge that having lost the weight once, I know I can do it again! So what if I've gained some, it'll come off just like the last time. I just need to keep my focus on and my mojo going. Which is why I come here! :D

Good luck and congratulations on a 2 stone re-loss!

Thanks Vicky well done on your weight loss too, you are right if we can do it once we can do it again. I am hoping this will be my final and successful attempt at weight loss. I know I have to exercise and know that it will get easier but it's getting the motivation that is the hard part. But I WILL because if I don't I will be back on this page in four years time starting again.

Hi Dipper

Welcome back and you made the right decision to get back on here with us all who help and support each other. I lost 2 stone with Weight Watchers and sadly put it all back on and more so I now have 2.5 stone to lose. I downloaded the NHS daily weekly progress and this starts tomorrow as I have been on hols this week. My partner is very supportive and we aim to do more exercise too - walking, swimming (which is low impact) and I have an exercise bike (now minus the dust). So I don't have any excuses and having just listened to a health programme about the potential for illness when you are over weight, I feel all the more incentive to do it. Yesterday I picked up a shopping basket in Tescos and filled it with 28 packs of lard then carried round to the next aisle before putting it back. What a weight!!! That was enough to let me realise what an effort it is carrying all this weight. So it's coming off! I look forward to hearing your progress - my chart is on the fridge and I will post here. Good luck!!!!!

Hi, thank you, I think I have made the right decision to come back every one is supportive and helpful and are very aware of how hard it is to lose weight. That was a good motivator carrying the lard round Tesco, I might give that a go myself if I begin to fall by the wayside. I have been eating healthy since January and although I did record my weight loss I didn't record my measurements until Sunday and that is what gave me the push to think about exercising. I was joking with my sister that if anyone saw my measurements they would thing I was buying a new bedroom carpet. I don't plan to measure myself again until the end of July and hopefully there will be a difference. Good luck I look forward to following your progress.

Make a plan to exercise with a friend or family member. This takes fleas motivation as you'll enjoy spending time with them and want to keep the plan with them.

If no one is free plan when you will do this- when you get up, lunchtime, early evening, later evening which days work for you?

Try different things until you find one you enjoy. Go slowly if it's difficult it's not a race!

Try Parklives free activities in local parks and parkrun a free weekly 5K they are very supportive of walkers and have a tail person so you'll never be last.

I really like being outdoors but do find excercise that suits you. Good luck

Thanks ClareMcr for the support. I sometimes walk with my sister and you are right it does make a huge difference as I would go out with her even when I can't be bothered. Today the weather is nice and I am off work so I have been weeding. I'm looking at lots of ways to increase my activity - it can only get easier.

The more regularly you exercise the fitter and then easier it gets. You get endorphins (feel happy hormones after exercise) feel happier and in turn want to do more it's a virtuous circle.

Hahaha Clare I even surprised myself yesterday when I was visiting my mother, I usually take the lift but instead I used the stairs. I intend to exercise every day plus do things like take the stairs etc it all helps.

2 stone lost is really good! Its small changes that make a difference and add up.
