Hi,

Start with your drinks, drink water, tea and coffee with small quantities of sugar and then without sugar at all so you can slowly change your taste. It is difficult at the beginning but once you get used to it you will discover that you can appreciate the taste.

Hi and welcome, Meg :)

I gave up all sugar 18 months ago, cold turkey. It was difficult to start with, but you very quickly get used to it and then the cravings stop.

I have no off switch, so a small amount of the sweet stuff, leads to a lot of the sweet stuff, so it's easier for me to go without altogether. Others are able to have small amounts and stop there. You need to decide which camp you sit in :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hi Meg23 ,

There is a helpful page from NHS Choices on Cutting down on sugar, which you might find useful:

Good luck!

I cut most of my sugar out and am just cutting out the last bits now by swapping my two sugars in my tea and sugar on cereal for canderel pot of sweetener like sugar, it was awkward for the first week to get used to, but when you try to go back to normal sugar after two weeks because you think you don't like it you find this too sweet. This means you are then fine with it completely. Whenever you want to drop down a sugar just do it by removing a small amount off the spoon gradually. I found this the easiest way. If you think you don't like it like this after a week or two then try to go back to the old way and you will usually find you are twisted the other way. That's how I done it. When I done this I also dropped off a few stone at the same time because any sweeteners I had never had calories. Some do though so best to make sure the one you use don't.
