Gout
I'm sorry to hear that you suffered an episode of gout, Redmanc, it sounds very painful. As we're not medically trained, I wouldn't like to offer advice on how best to avoid another attack and would hope that your GP would be able to help you. There is, however, a lot of information online, including this

and as gout is a form of arthritis, you may want to join a community that will be able to answer your specific health related questions?

I hope this helps
My husband had gout for the first time last September. It was treated with steroids because he can't take anti- inflammatories (like ibuprofen). He has kept it at bay since by increasing his fluid intake (to dissolve the pesky crystals which cause it). So that means less alcohol, (not that he drinks much) a lot more water and we have converted to caffeine free coffee. We drink about five cups a day, so it has made a huge difference. And decaf (especially Nescafé Gold Blend decaf) is so nice these days, it's certainly no hardship. Hope you feel better soon.
As already said research it and try different things one might just help.
I had a period 8 years ago when first my big toe flared up with gout and yes there is no pain like it so I sympathise greatly. I thought it was a one off but about a year later for 6 months it came back off and on but this time it affected my knees and hands, I could actually feel it coming on, luckily the flare ups lasted about 2 days but I found Apple Cider Vinegar tablets worked for me so I continued to take them for years. No alcohol, also I cut down on red meats.
Good luck it's horrendous I feel for you greatly. 😢
I am a long time gout sufferer but manage to keep any bouts of gout down by both taking some medication, my GP prescribed 100mgs Allopurinol a day, but I also found that certain foods which are high in purine could trigger an attack so I am careful with eating too much in the way of pulses and also excessive alcohol can act as a trigger. My two sons also suffer and they found that drinking Peroni beer triggers theirs!
Everyone can have different things that can trigger an attack but it is down to a build up of uric acid crystals in the joints that cause the pain so anything that helps reduce the production of uric acid in the body will help. Oh and eating celery helps too as this is a diuretic.
Thank you all for your replies I much appreciate it . Think I need research and find out what works for me.
