Advice please on daily calorie allowance

I'm coming to the end of my first 12 weeks healthy eating and have been working on 1400 cal p day. In the main I've kept to that but the last couple of weeks have been harder work. I've just checked my BMI again with my current weight, a stone and a pound off, the lower end of the allowance is 1670. I was wondering what the thinking is about increasing the daily allowance. I still have a long way to go, at least another 3 stones. Any thoughts?

My suggestion would be to increase your calorie intake to 1700 or more for a week and see where that gets you. If you still lose weight and at an (for you) acceptable rate, then why not continue on that level?

I suppose I'm nervous of slowing down the weight loss but a week isn't long in the scheme of things, thanks.

Exactly, and if you do a controlled trial type of thing, then you will also know how your body responds to it and you can adjust accordingly after a week. No harm done

I would always eat the most I can and still lose weight 😊

Very well done on finishing 12 weeks and losing over a stone! That's excellent weight loss 😊🎉👏🎈😊

Good luck with the next 12 😊😊😊

I started off with 1,400 calories but as my exercise increased I felt hungry so I increased it to 1,600 which I found was too much. Finally I settle at 1,500 calories which suits me fine. If you increase it for a week like PippiRuns said and see how you get on, you and always bring it down if your not happy.

Well done with losing 1 stone 1 pound.

Hi nac150,

I agree with Iben and Anna. I read all about eating more and still losing weight from others on this forum and, quite frankly, didn't believe a word of it.

Eventually I realised that I couldn't sustain what I was eating over the long term (I had a lot of weight to lose too) which was just over 1300 calories a day and I decided to experiment a bit and see what happened.

Guess what? I continued to lose weight and it didn't even slow down, plus I didn't feel like I was starving so it has been easier to keep going. I now eat around 1600 calories a day which is just above the lower end of the range suggested. Bearing in mind I am only 5ft tall and still losing weight I think you should be fine on 1670.

Give it a try and see what happens; you might be pleasantly surprised!

Good luck x

Thank you all for your encouraging replies. I'll finish this week on 1400 then start experimenting. it makes sense not to go too low for the long haul so fingers crossed....

Wise words from all. Such a low calorie and you have famously now up the calories, staying stalls the systems it needs to shaken up in lay men terms. Your system needs to produce so more important elements it has some what gone into hibernation. Increasing the calories will fuel it to work harder, increase your more. Best wishes you are on your way to a fantastic finish.
